just weight betsy as most are saying she is chubby lets say.....1350gms...is this big?...normal?

ive replied on your other thread..I think a healthy sow is 700-900g, so average 850 grams

A healthy male should weigh 1200grams max so you really need to get that weight controlled! ;)

I will add thats my opinion on my scales for my rescue and pet piggies, other people could say otherwise?

i think so..i read somwhere that 900g for a female and 1000g for a male is about right. I could be wrong though!

Are you sure she's not pregnant?  ;D

thats exactly what i said (preggers) if not then she is VERY overweight in my humble opinion and you probably will have to address that in case it causes her any long term health problems...or maybe short term..I'm not sure about weight issues regarding being too heavy :-\

oh god dont say that!!...she is here with me now...just fely her tummy.....i dont think so ....cant feel anything obvious ...she is very big framed ...ill measure her.... :-\

she has really bonded with me tiny sow...i cant restrict her food unless i split them up again ... :(

10.5 inces long 12 inch waist 14 inches hips..lol 4.5 inches tall........

I could be wrong, there are people on here that have probbaly had obese pigs and can tell you what to do...I dont want to say anything but I'm sure theres a way around making her healthy without splitting them up! O0

You should take her to the vet, they can weigh her and maybe give you a diet sheet...to be honest she didnt look pregnant, just fat ;D Get a pic of her from above (birds eye) so we can see her shape, then may be able to tell O0

tbh i weigh my piggies not measure them so i dont know what the measurments mean but ive told you the weights i think are okay...

I wouldn't panic too much about her weight.

She is on the large side but not the largest I've heard of by a long way and by looking at her pictures in the gallery she doesn't look pregnant or hugely obese.

I have had several pigs who weigh well over 3lb and they were just big, healthy chunky pigs.

All she needs is lots of fresh food and hay and a limited amount of dry food (one handful per pig per day) and lots of space to run about and exercise. If you put this in place any excess weight she is carrying will be worked off but don't be surprised if she stays similar size as it may just be her size and build.

2 of my sows are approx 1100-1200g if not a little more, i thought they were meant to be that size lol my girls are quite chubby around the belly, and they have never had a male in with them in their 5 years they have been with me, so i think some may be bigger than others

thankyou i feel better now.....she did not have a run at her last home ...so i think a few weeks in mine will slim her down a bit ... ;D

;D

Ive had problems with underweight piggies not overweight, I'm used to seeing much smaller numbers ;D I was just worried as its a sow..and weighs more than harry who is MASSIVE ;D

Good luck sorting her out! like i say there are lots of people on here that can help and suggest things!

Spudnik...what do you expect when you feed them lard ;D ;D Just kidding! I agree with what you are saying about them all being diff sizes! But i still think thats pretty obese!

hmm i never thought they were, my girls are both healthy, run around and get plenty of exercise, eat plenty of fresh food and hay but no more that my other 3, gucci was a little smaller but morgan has always been a big girl

Its not obese at all!

Have just been on a conversion site as I'm not sure with grams etc. Even the heaviest pig mentioned here is only 2.9lb which is perfectly within normal weight range for healthy adult pigs.

The 850g stated as normal for an adult sow earlier on in this thread is only 1.8lb which is extremely small in my experience - I woiuld regard an adult pig weighing in around that mark as underweight.... The 1200g for males too is not exactly huge - come and meet come of my big rexes and you'll see big pigs!

This link has lots of useful information about weight etc and the weight charts make interesting reading!

edited to add link

ill just see how she goes ive only had her a day...i have to say though she is so cuddly and squidgy... ;D

will have a read in the morning smiler..thanks for you advise everyone.... O0

I think pet piggies always tend to be heavier than the veterinary standards stated on a lot of sites as we all spoil them and so they weigh a lot more than pigs who exist on a very basic diet. I'm sure pigs are like people too and the average weight is slowly creeping up and up as diet and living conditions improve! All my pigs have exactly the same to eat but the weights of the adults range from 2lb 2oz all the way to 3lb 1oz - who knows how that works but they are all nice and healthy so thats all that matters. Mine are all rescue pigs too and I have also dealt with a lot of extremely underweight foster pigs so I love seeing them nice and chubby and healthy.

Generally speaking a healthy range seems to be between 2lb and 3lb where ever you look and as Sonya's sow is well within this all is well and good!

;D Exactly! But mine getting to the target weight is usually a celebration so that sounds massive to me! ;D And I love a fat cuddley piggy :smitten:

1350g is just short of 3lb :)
She is chubby but not overweight and as far as i'm aware rexes make bigger piggies. My rex boar is over 3lbs & is a lovely healthy chubby boy ;D

This is what I said in your pigture thread-

As far as the weight goes- they *shouldn't* weight 700-900 grams, that's the average. If she isn't hungry she won't eat. I have guinea pigs at the rescue that are that size and I've seen larger. She's a big piggy but she isn't fat, so I wouldn't worry about it.

If she's healthy then don't worry about it! Guinea pigs shouldn't be on a diet unless prescribed by a vet. A guinea pig won't eat unless hungry, so don't limit her food, water, or hay. Just make sure she gets lots of exercise and is a healthy, happy piggy!

My boys are 1100, 950 and 625 (600 really, he's a lot of floof and only 3.75 months)
the weight doesn't matter as long as they can bend down to eat their own poops ;)(that's how i measure guineapig health ;D)

I speak to girls in the US and they've got lots of piggies in the 3lb mark :)
It seems that some are big boned, bigger frame, i'd not worry as long as she can move around and she eats properly she's one chubby healthy piggie and happy :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Sonya from my knowledge, experience and in my opinion a pet sow should weigh no less then 800gms, when I say pet I mean one that hasn't been bred for a specific reason e.g. mixed breed guineas. However Betsy was breed to be a show guinea pig, in the show world guineas are much bigger, stockier and of course this makes them heavier then pet guineas. So you have nothing to worry about, her weight seems fine. In fact I believe a guinea should weigh slightly more then what they should as if they fall ill they normally lose weight, so if she falls ill and loses a bit of weight she will still be a good weight. The guineas you have already are only babies so she is going to look huge next to them and from the photo she looks in the best condition possible. Also from the photos she doesn't look at all pregnant. Hope this makes sense, anyway like I have said you have nothing to worry about. ;)
