After seeing something about harmful bacteria in the flood water we are now wondering if the reason so many of our piggies are ill is down to feeding them grass. At least 60% of our grass is on waterlogged ground so finding a dry area is getting harder. Most of our flood water is coming off the field which is struggling to cope and has nothing planted in it by the farmer

If in doubt I wouldnt feed them it, they dont "need" it as such anyway and can happily just have hay and veggies until it all dries up x

I wouldn't feed grass in your situation as you don't know what's in the flood water! :(

I'd avoid feeding it to them, if it's water that's flowed through farmland it could have anything in it, probably E.coli and a mixture of different agrochemicals that have sank into the soil.

so is it ok to give them grass if your not in flooded areas? I always dry the grass on a towel if its wet but only give them abit each day? my garden is on a slope the grass at the top isn't waterlogged or anything

If it is from an area of the garden where you know what fertilisers have been used and you know that dogs/cats havent peed on it then sure its generally just fine to feed them that grass :-) I would personally pick it each day rather than pick loads and hand it out slowly.

yes I just pick abit fresh each day, my new piggies are really enjoying it,

Our grass isn't flooded in this area, and I've been picking some each day for Oscar - it doesn't seem to grow much at this time of year, so my own supplies run out - and I go to the neighbours and pick theirs too.

Well we are now more under water than when I went to work this morning. It looks as though the piggies won't be having grass until it dries out and the grass starts growing in earnest. Auntie Sue, Dill has asked if Oscar can send virtual enjoyment messages so he can pretend he's eaten some yummy grass as salad just doesn't taste quite as nice

Of course, he will do so immediately.
