Is He Liking This

Start slowly as he hasn't had veg before, too much all of a sudden could upset his stomach and he may not eat it all if he doesn't know what it is.

Is he getting loads of hay and some pellets too? :)

Yeah and some grass he loves that any suggestions what to start with x

I'm no expert but maybe start with a bit of bell pepper? My girls love that. Maybe nothing too watering like cucumber to start with as it might give him a funny tummy.

Maybe others who know more about this sort of this can give you more comprehensive advice :)

Thank you I appreciate you taking the time to help xx

I suggest bell pepper too. Small amounts of leaves might be a good idea too - baby spinach, rocket, romaine lettuce. They shouldn't be fed more than twice a week generally because of a high calcium content but they make for a good variety. You could try herbs like parsley and coriander. Carrots and carrot tops, kale, broccoli...just be warned he might not eat any of it for a few days, especially if veg is alien to him.

Oh Crikey, that's bad advice :( Poor little lad.

Please start off with pepper as suggested above. Red Pepper and Yellow pepper tend to go down very well. Start off slowly with the veg at first this week and build up. try a tiny bit of cucumber and add tyhis slowly his little tummy won't be used to veg yet. Absolutely disgusting advice from the pet shop....

Here is a thread worth having a read of Recommendations For A Balanced General Guinea Pig Diet

Important is unlimited hay in piggies diet.

We feed ours this roughly
Morning:
Cucumber
Celery
1/6th of Red/Green/Yellow Bell Pepper (de-seeded)

Evening:
Cucumber
Two Little Gem Lettuce leaves or 10 sprigs Coriander. Twice a week we will swap in cabbage or parsley

We also add in to the above diet carrot, sweet potato, celery leaves and a few other things occasionally

That sounds a lot I have went and got red peppers broccoli and sweet corn I will start slow just with the pepper then gradually add the rest in I'm not quite sure how much tho I will jave a look through threads x

Regarding Hay Harvey, we use meadow in a litter tray & Timothy hay just for eating, I fill up twice a day but with 1 lad you will probably only need too do it once a day, you can't give Alpha hay as it's rich. Only hay though no straw, or he could end up with a eye poke & you'll end with a vet bill.
I you are stuck on how much to give, if he eats all of it, you need to give him more. Have you looked on the housing thread, there's loads of set ups there to give you ideas.
Just remembered if you give him a plastic igloo, take it away in the summer as they can get too hot. He has to be neutered if you want to put him in with a sow. After the op you need to wait 6 weeks before you can mix him with the ladies. Mines only got another 2 weeks before he can play with the others.
I assume if they told you that about veg I assume you got him from a pet shop. Probably Pets at home. Lol

No that's how I'm surprised as well it's a wee family run pet shop that's been open about 20 years! I think I might just keep the cardboard box he seems to like it lol I have just cut the bottom out as he wet it lol...just enquiries about getting him neutered it's quite expensive lol xc

To be fair to Pets at Home, I've never known them to come out with something as ridiculous as that. I'd say this is far more likely one person not having a clue what they're talking about and passing themselves off as totally knowledgeable.

I use easi-pet, I have a excellent vet there & we only paid £40 go for another lad then. Although I love my girls, I find the boy more friendly.

Do you think two boys would be okay together I would worry about fighting x

Hi Harvey, welcome! You've had some great advice already. I found here a year ago just as we got our first pigs and was amazed at how much I had to learn. My advice to you is to go and make a cup of tea and read every single sticky post in the care, behaviour, feeding and housing type boards. You'll learn about cage sizes, "piggy dating", best diet in fact everything to help you get the most out of your pig but also to help your pig get the most out of life too! The guys here are brilliant, I can't recommend them highly enough.

Bottomless houses are the best. Mine have a little stool to sit under with vet bed as a rug. They also have a wooden shelter with two exits (that I found in the cupboard) and a 32litre underbed storage box piled high with hay that they make tunnels in.

Thanks timmypiggy it's so expensive to get him neutered is it ever to late to add another or do I have time he's only a baby he's about 12 weeks x

That's double what I paid, all the meds were thrown in for that price too.
Some of the rescues will bond him for you.

I don't think I think I have any near I'm in Glasgow xx

Yeah it's a bit far would probarbly pay the same for petrol lol...will need to start saving although he is jumping about mad I think he's actually happy lol x
