Is It Difficult To Bond 2 Boars?

IMG_5992.webp I really wanna get my piggie, Gus, a friend, he's about 12 weeks old and I've had him for a week, I've been looking at rescues and I'm keeping my eye out for any males, I don't want to get him neutered as I don't really have that much money at the moment for vet bills, so I was wondering if it's difficult to bond two boars as obviously I don't want gus to be lonely
 
It really depends on the personality of the boars. I would suggest going to your local Petco or Petsmart and getting as young of a male as possible. It's easier to bond a baby to adult than and adult to an adult. Both Petco and Petsmart will let your return a guinea pig if it doesn't get along with your current pig, that's why I recommend going there. Also on a side note neutering ONLY keeps a male from producing young his behavior will NOT change at all. I rescued a nuetered pig and put him in with my girls, there was lots of you know what going on, I had to rehome him because he wouldn't quit bugging them. Just introduce them on neutral territory.
 
I think it is great that you want to get your piggie a friend.
They really are much happier with companionship.

But I would highly recommend finding a local rescue and working with them.
Many of them offer a dating service so you can take your boy along to meet some potential friends. Plus the whole thing will be managed by experts in guinea pig behavior and has the best chance of success.

Another huge advantage of using an experienced rescue is you will be guaranteed to get a correctly sexed piggie who is healthy.
Many people on here have found that the pet store has sold them a wrongly sexed piggie, and they end up with a mixed sex pair which later results in lots more piggies. :(

Bonding two guinea pigs can be quite tricky, so having someone on hand to help will make the whole process easier for both you and your boy.

If you have two youngsters together they hit the tricky hormone stage together.An older boar from a rescue that could help you bond them would be ideal.

At that young pre-puberty age, Gus should bond fairly easily with another youngster; especially of you are looking for a more submissive one. However, what you cannot control is how they develop once they hit the big hormones. At the worst, they will end up as "can't live together - can't live apart" next door neighbours with each needing their own territory but still being bonded through the bars and getting their constant stimulation from their mutual presence. A number of members has a boar pair like this.

Unfortunately and very frustratingly, there are currently no good, piggy savvy rescues in the whole of Scotland that allow you to boar date at the rescue, so you will rather have to take your potluck. :(

Thanks for your help! I have a pet shelter near me which has guinea pigs but I'm not sure they do the dating thing
