Is it impaction?

Poor dexter seems to have developed toilet problems this evening. Was giving him a check over and noticed soft poop in the cage so took him out to clean his bottom and noticed some poop that hasn't come out. With a gentle cuddle dexter kindly pooped all over the towel and was squeaking slighty. We cleaned him up and all was fine but it seems to have happened again a mere 20 mins later.

What do I do? Could this be impaction? Or diahorrea? A side effect of baytril? He is on baytril twice a day as he has an infection following his neutering procedure!

Hi, this is quite possibly a reaction to the baytril. how long ago was he castrated and has he had a post op check yet? the best thing would be to take him back to the vet to see if he needs to continue on the baytril and if his bowels are feeling gassy
i would also start giving him probiotics and some syringe food to help keep his nutrient levels and fliud intake up. has he been eating as normal since his op? if not syringe feeding and a trip to the vet are both required.

he was castrated last tuesday and has been to the vets 3 times since. he has another appointment this evening at 6.20pm. he has been eating, not as much as normal but still coming up to the bars for his dinner!

will let you know what the vet says, poor fella was in a right pickle. he is home alone today so hopefully is getting lots of rest without me constantly checking him!

hope all goes well for him this evening. as he was castrated a week ago and if his wound is healing nicely your vet may feel here is no need to continue anti biotics, if however they want him to stay on anti biotics for longer and agree he may be reacting to the baytril there are other anti biotics they could switch him too such as septrin.

sometimes piggies will eat a little less for a few days following castration but after a week he should be back up to his usual amount. as said it may be the bayril that is causing his poos to be soft, as a result of killing off some of the good bacteria in his gut, or it maybe that his guts have slowed down or become gassy due to eating less.

if he is eating and drinking less, combined with softer (and therefore more moist) poos he has an increased risk of becoming dehydrated, so please ask your vet this evening to check this. sometimes some sub cut fluids can make a world of difference

post op can be such a worrying time but with good care your fella should be able to make a good recovery. please let us know how he gets on

Baytril can affect guinea pigs sensitive stomachs, perhaps reduce his veg/fruit intake for a few days and try him on a probiotic such as Fibreplex or Avipro Plus

Hi all

Following dexters trip to the vets we have been advised that the high dose of Metacam was the cause of the toilet problems. Dosage has been halved for now and he is to go back for a check up on Friday. Poops are a better shape now and he was bleeding when excreting however just been to check on him and the clean white bedding he had put down last night is almost blood free - few spots which the vet has advised is normal.

I am actually going away on holiday today keeper my wonderful OH is looking after the pigs and does a fab job.

Ironically, given all the problems dexter has had with his wound, the vet was more concerned over his bottom!

He is eating and drinking fine although I am encouraging him to drink plenty. He is now having the recovery powder sprinkled on food.

Hopefully we are on the mend! X
