One of my neutered boars, Oakley, seemed a bit off today. When he didn't come out for his ffod I knew something was wrong.

His breathing sounds a bit nasal and I noticed he has a big red raw sore just above him bum about an inch square. There is no fur there and it is really read. He also has a small patch behind his ear. One of his wives, Daffodil, has a tiny patch behind her ear but his other wife, Violet, seems fine.

Does it sound like mites? I am taking them to the vet tomorrow I just wanted people's opinions. He hasn't eaten anything my poor boy. I am so worried about him :(

get them all to the vets asap, sounds like mites and they'll all need to be treated if in the same cage

The red patch could be mites, don't forget that all guineas have a patch of fur missing behind the ear to aid their hearing.

I would also be concerned about the breathing, that could be a different problem, maybe a URI but I would whizz him to the vets most definitly. Mites come out in times of stress so if he is unwell anyway they would most certainly appear.

Hope he is ok. :)

Poor Oakley has a mild chest infection and scabies :( I have syringe fed him tonight as he isn't eating much :(

The vet gave me Ivermectin to apply to the back of his neck every 2 weeks for 6 weeks, and some to treat Violet and Daffoldil who live with him. He is also on a weeks course of Baytril. Luckily, he is an indoor Guinea so he is able to stay nice and warm.

We seem to think the scabies are from the hay as we got a bale from a different farm. Is it worth not using this farm again or is it just unlucky?

I'm pretty sure scabies is just another way of describing mites and these are not "caught", It is Lice that can come from hay, so no need to change supplier. Here's wishing him a speedy recovery :)

Bless him, looks like you caught the URI early though which is good. is he eating ok? If not Critical Care should be given via a syringe. Mites aren't caught from hay but comes out in times of stress which would add up as he is unwell so they have come out on him.

Keep us posted on him.

Yeah she said that they are 'borrowimg mites' as she could not see any on her microscope.

No he is not eating :( Where can I get critical care from?

I am relieved about the hay as I am using it for all the piggies AND bunnies!

You can also get it from your vets, he really should have given you some. Mashed up pellets with water and if you have no syringes use a tea spoon or baby food would do I couldn't find any that Cuzzy liked when I had to syringe feed him.

I'd offer water too just to keep him hydrated. :)

The vet gave me some syringes and I have been using these. I am going back to her for bunny vaccs so should I get some or just carry on with the pellets?

How about liquidising his veg?

I am worried about his Vit C levels...shall I liquidise his veg to syringe?

Sorry for all the questions...I am so worried about him...he looks so poorly and sorry for himself :(

In this case I would get some vitamin c drops, from a chemist as long as they are just vitamin c that shoudl be fine. I've no experience of giving those, can someone advise? :)

The vet gave me some Critical Care today...he is not eating ANYTHING! I am syringingo water too to keep him hydrated. How often shoud I syringe him the Critical Care. Will get him some Vit C (the vet said it was a good idea too)

Please send him vibes...he looks so poorly bless him.

*/D He's gone :(

I can't believe I am saying this but Oakley passed away this evening.

He hadn't seemed to have got any worse. I took him out for his syringe feed, antibiotics and Critical Care. He seemed very sleepy so I made a hot water bottle, covered it and he slept by my side on the sofa. About an hour later I held him close to me for cuddles...he made little purry noises like they do when they are happy. After about 10 mins, he started shaking like he was having a fit. My OH took him whilst I got the phone to call the vet. He had another 'fit' and that was it...he was gone :(

I have no idea why this happened and we are both heart broken. The worst part was having to bury him outside in the cold :(

I let Violet and Daffodil see his body and left him with them for a bit.

Thank you all for your advice. I feel like I have failed him :( Maybe I should have done more. I hope he knows how much we love him and I would never have done anything to put him in danger.

We lit a candle for him in our bedroom where he lived and buried him with his Christmas present. I can't believe he won't be here for Christmas :(

I miss him so much :( I am crying whilst wriing this :(

I'm so sorry to hear about Oakley. Mites can cause fitting, the fact he wasn't eating either didn't help. You did all you could. Thinking of you, it must have been very traumatic to see that. x

I'm so sorry to hear about Oakley. Sometimes this can happen. You did everything you could for him xx
