I lost one of my piggies a couple of months ago and think she needs another friend. She loved her friend and isn’t dominant at all.
A local sanctuary has some 5month olds.
Would it be ok to pair them?
Hi!
Mutual liking and character compatibility come long before age! Yes, you can pair up piggies like that. Ideally you date your sow and let her make her choice; this generally guarantees for a good bond.
However, I would recommend considering forming a trio if you have the space for these reasons:
- An older sow is often more likely to accept a couple of younger sows than a single one, especially if you are not able to date.
- You won't be faced with the same problem a few years down the road.
If you do this, try to choose two sows that get on well and hang out together most often. That usually means that they are good friends.
If you want an even more extreme example that it can work:
Ffwlbri is coming up to 8 years old, Carys in this picture is 6 weeks (she is now 3 months) and neutered boar Gethin is nearly 3 years old.
It was love on first sight between 5 months old Gethin and Ffwlbri's then 5 year old Tesni. They lived happily together for 2 years until Tesni passed away earlier this year at 7 years of age. By then bereaved Ffwlbri had joined her sister. She is still going well. Little Carys is the wifelet that will hopefully last Gethin out.
All piggies are rescue adoptees by the way!
