I started having guineapig as a pet last year . When I got my babies (I got two of them ) since then I've noticed one of my babies doesn't eat any kind of veggies or grass or hay . He just eats carrots and water spinach . I tried several times to feed him proper foods but he just leaves the food untouched. He poops very less and unformed . Maybe that's because of not eating hay . But is it normal ? Isn't it harmful for him not to eat the most imp food ? I just can't find a way to make himeat healthy. I brought him to me when he was 3 months old . He used to eat pellets and carrots there . Is this the reason he doesn't eat veggies or hay ?

Hi and welcome to the forum, there are very knowledgeable people on this forum that will be able to help you but I do know that spinach is very high and calcium and can cause bladder problems and carrots are meant for a treat occasionally, he definitely should be eating hay more than anything else, maybe he is eating it when you’re not watching, maybe put some in a hay rack and monitor how much is disappearing, what’s his weight like?

As was mentioned on your other thread, hay is the most important part of their diet. It provides them with vitamin c and fibre, keeps their guts going and helps keep their teeth worn down. I would consider stopping the carrot and spinach. Carrots are high in sugar and spinach is high in calcium. You don’t want that in their diet regularly. His poops are few and unformed because he’s not eating enough hay.

If possible (depending on availability and cost), could you try different types of hay? Although I’m assuming you have already done this.

Was he living with other guinea pigs before you got him? What was he like at his previous place of residence - did he eat veg normally?

One you could try is coriander, though I assume that’s also been suggested already. A couple of sprigs. Sometimes it’s also about persistence. Slice the veg and put it in the cage. If it’s still there later then you remove it. Keep doing the same every day. I’d start with the coriander then try bell pepper. As he’s not been eating veg you need to try and introduce them slowly.

The other is do you have somewhere you could get some fox and dog pee free grass? Though it would have to be a significant amount to keep up with him. Does he like alone or with other piggies? Does he ever try and snatch the food out of their mouths?

Hope he starts munching on grass or hay soon!

As the others have said and as I said on the other thread about this piggy, his diet is not a healthy one.

Hay and grass keeps correct gut function and also keeps his teeth wearing properly. Without the correct diet he will have digestive problems as you are seeing with his poops. He may also end up with dental problems and overgrown teeth.

Do you make sure hay is always available in the cage?
Does he live with another guinea pig? They learn from each other.
Have you tried grass?
Have you tried other types of vegetables?
Does he still have pellets?

Water spinach is not botanically a type of spinach at all. It’s a semi aquatic tropical plant which is related to morning glory.

He was with his parents for three months . I asked his previous owner if he gave them grass or hay . He said that he gave but didn't know who ate them . He is very polite . I never saw my baby snatching food from others . He munches on food for very long time . I tried different types of grass and hays but he doesn't even open his mouth or shows interest in them . His teeth is healthy. And for now pellets are unavailable for few months here I don't know the reason . He weights around 511 gm . I tried giving him tbh not him all of them capsicum and coriander and cucumber. They doesn't even touch them . I don't know how I'll make him eat healthy.

Does he live in the cage with another piggy? They learn by taking food from other piggies.
You said in another thread that he is 14 months old. Is that correct? (Is he the piggy in this thread Poop)
If so then 511g is very small for a piggy of that age. My two youngest boys weighed 500g when they were 8 weeks old, now they are 10 months old and weigh around 1000g.
Is he gaining weight at each weekly weight check?

Yes he is the same piggy . He lives with other four piggies. But they are two months and three months old . They are in pretty good health because they eat grass and hay . They also don't like veggies. He is not gaining weight . It is always around 500 gm . And I can't completely rely on vets because once a vet gave him a medicine which is for cow and goats . Some vets don't even recognise that they are guineapigs. That's why if something happens I rush here to you guys . I'm sad that they are in a country where is no doctor available for them .

Are all the piggies male?
If so, are you aware that five males together doesn’t usually work? They need a lot of space 500x100cm of cage space.
Once the younger ones start becoming teenagers and becoming hormonal, they are likely to fight and need to be separated.

At 14 months old and only 500g, not gaining weight, he sounds to be severely underweight probably due to poor nutrition. His teeth may not be ok if he is not eating hay and grass.
I'm not sure what we can suggest. He needs to be eating hay and grass as it is 80% of the daily food intake and seeing a vet. I understand that’s not going to be possible for you though.

I am assuming that hay is always available in their cage. What veg have you tried the other guinea pigs on? How long did you try before really seeing that they don’t like it? Sometimes you have to be really persistent. That means offering every day and if not eaten then you take out the cage, rinse and repeat every day.

You probably answered the question but is there also grass available to him? What happens if you take him out the cage and have him sat with his own pile of hay and grass?

What is his relationship like with the others he’s living with?

As above, there isn’t much we can suggest unfortunately. It’s worrying he’s not eating the essentials and tough because there aren’t any knowledgable vets there.
