Is it safe?

A friend was going to buy a dwarf rabbit, and had brought everything that it needed. She has now decided to wait until the summer when she moves, so has given me everything that she had brought (i am very greatful as you can never have enough water bottles in the weather expected!)

Although i don't have bunnies she has given me a bag of dwarf bunny pellets from pets@home. It seems such a shame to through it away and i was wondering whether it would be safe to MIX with my piggies food? I have looked at the ingredients on the packaging, and can see nothing that would harm them, but want to make sure.

I'm not sure but I do know that guinea pig pellets contain vitamin C which is important as they don't produce vitamin C themselves. If bunnies produce Vitamin C then their pellets may not contain it. I am sure it won't be long before someone who knows will be able to advise you.

Thank you. It won't be their main food. I will mix the 2kg bag of bunny feed, with the 15kg bag of piggy food.

Be careful that you give your piggies plenty of vitamin C - bunnies can produce vitamin C in their bodies, whereas piggies can't; that's why rabbit pellets do not contain vitamin. Rabbits need lots more roughage than guinea pigs and that is reflected in the composition of the pellets.

You could ask your vets or a local rabbit rescue whether they could use the bunny pellets, so they go to the right animals.

I have decided my piggies won't be getting the bunny pellets. Although i can't see from the ingredients that they have anti-coccidiosis medication (ACS) in them.

I have added the bag to a local pet advertising page, to see if anyone would like the pellets. (Unfortunately, there are no local bunny rescues near me).

I thought some rabbit food contained an antibiotic which prevented a disease in rabbits but shortened the life of guinea pigs ... ?

yep thats anti - coccidiosis (ACS) but its not written on the bag!

Will just play it safe and find someone that will find a use for it

Do you not have an SSPCA in the area? I give my piggies Chudleys Rabbit food along with plenty of fresh fruit/veg and hay etc and they love it. MInd you it is highlighted as piggy safe on the bag it just recommends increasing the vitamin c rich foods in their diet.

Not sure where in Kent you are, but Crawley GPR has some resident rabbits, and Bobtails in Ewell (Surrey) are a bunny rescue, so if you ever come thisaway there will be willing users here!
