Hey, I know there was a thread where someone asked how warm peoples houses are or something like this, but I can't find it anymore. :(
Anyway, it's really cold here, it gets about -27C outside and our heating isn't that great, since I live in an apartment building and my apartment is the outer corner one.
Usually when I'm home, it's about 18 degrees in my room where the piggies are, but when I'm not home, it can go down to about 16... is it too cold? Today when I got home it was 16,8 and now I've been home for an hour and it's now 18,7.

Just put some extra hay in for the piggies. I know my house can drop to 16.5. Piggies are quite resilient and aslong as they are not skinny pig's they should be fine.

I know they can't have rapid changes in temperature, but I can't see that that's too cold?

My hubby hates the heating on, he's always hot, and so so,etimes it's as cold as 12/13 but my piggies have never been bothered at all, it's not had any ill effects. But they are surrounded by fleece everything and ten tonnes of hay :-)

It is -2 degrees celcius on Saturday...
My two 2 year old sows are in a garage ...
Hope they will be okay!

:agr:

As long as they've got places to snuggle up with some hay , 15 degrees celcius is OK

Thank you all :) They have lots of hay and a little fleece blanket that they love to go under, so I thought they'd be okay, I just wanted to be sure. :)

Couldn't you take them inside for that time/make it warmer in the garage? :)

Sadly my parents do not want them inside.

The garage is insulated and next to the ultility, the hutch has insulation, lots of hay and heat pads.

They survived last winter with less insulation and they were not in a garage.

My parents won't buy me a heater as they just bought a microwave ( just for the heat pads) and they say it could be a potential fire hazard.

we always know when ours are feeling chilly as they sit there looking all bristled-up and miserable! Although they live in a nice warm living-room they spend a lot of time out of doors for most of the year as they really enjoy grass-time and we can always tell just by looking at them if it is time to get them back in. To keep them warm i recommend 'slippers' as ours seem to absolutely love sitting in them and i would imagine that as they are fleecy and soft they are excellent for maintaining body-heat - here is Dave looking toasty....

What a good idea - slippers !

The temperature was 13.5 on our heating thermometer this morning. Luckily mum was up before me and put the heater on to warm the room up a bit for the pigs. They were probably warmer than that though as put hay in their house bit last night & covered the cage with a towel and blanket. This weather is too cold for me (I'm always freezing!) so I hate thinking how cold the pigs might feel.

My shed has an oil filled heater. I keep the shed temperature at around 16/17 and they are very happy. Any more and it gets very stuffy. They do have lots of hay and a blanket over their c&c.

Btw I cannot imagine -27!
