hey ive just read that you should NEVER feed your guinea pigs iceberg lettuce or cauliflower is this true and if it is why ?:^-:^-

I know that the iceburg lettuce bit is true
I heard it made them pee more and dehydrated them - I don't know how true that reason is though

not too sure about cauliflower sorry

Kira x

I give my guinea pigs cauliflower, and they seem fine :) But as members have already metioned, too much of it can cause gas :)

You can give iceberg lettuce just not every day and not a lot of it. It's kind of a treat really. :)

Iceberg lettuce is not suitable as it is all water and no nutrition, so not only is it giving them no goodness, it can also give them the runs if overfed. They do of course love it, as we love things that are not good for us. xx

I just give mine Romaine Lettuce.
Ice-Burg lettuce is something to be fed to them very strictly but it's normally on a "DO NOT" list for Guinea feeding.

I find it safer to just stay away from Iceburg...There are lots of other types that are just as easy to get hold of, so you can avoid it and still give them lettuce.
If you're in a place that has an alternative, it's just better to get it, I think. I couldn't handle giving them something that's probly not too good for them, I worry way, way too much.

I always thought you could give it as a treat, very little once in a while, no ?

I have given my piggies iceberg lettuce and cauliflower when there was no other food available; but never regularly.

Iceberg has a high concentration of nitrates, that's why it should not be fed.

Iceberg lettuce has nothing good other than causing health issues for guinea pigs so its not worth feeding at all, with all the other varietys out there noone really needs to feed it,my pigs favourites are red oak,cos and butter.
Most of my pigs hate the white part of the cauliflour but love the leaves so they get the leaves maybe once a week sometimes less,it can cause gas so you have to be careful, some pigs are particuarly sensitive and cant have any cauliflour/cabbage as it makes them ill.

I thought lettuce gave them a bad tummy, my breeder said never to let them touch it. Never knew about cauliflower though as it is more or less brocolli and mine love that! :))

They haven't had brocolli for a few days, I gave them some at the weekend, it is baby corn cobs and cucumber with herbs mainly - I keep giving them cherry tomatoes but they don't seem to want them so I will keep those for myself! :<>

Is there anything else they love daily that I could be missing out on?
