Is Muesli ok? If so whats the best one?

Ok so as most of you know Harry has not had a good start to his piggyhood but now is all nice and settled here with me and is even starting to trust his hooooman.
However I've ealways fed excel nuggest but he doesnt touch them. He was an muesli at the rescue and when i added a little to the nuggest to experiment he picked all the muesli out and left the nuggets and since feeding the muesli hes came on leaps and bounds.
So my question is he obviously prefers it and has been through so much, he had lots of hay dried grass and veggies, is it ok to keep him on Muesli? And if so whats the best brand to buy. Ive got in the house at the moment Wagg and gerty.
 
I'm not 100% sure as to which one is the best but I'd try and persevere with the pellets if I were you (unless he's losing weight and form) and maybe mix in a very small amount of muesli in to try and "trick" him into eating the pellets.

Have you tried the blackcurrant and oregano pellets? Mine go mad for them :)
 
No Just the ordinary ones. Theo doesnt mind them as hes never known any different but he doesnt go bad for me topping up the bowl. He hates the nuggets and hes still gaining weight he lost post surgery . I'm almost too scared to try that I dont want to risk him going off his food. I could maybe get a sample of the blackcurrent ones.

If you write to excel and explain the situation they'd no doubt send you some samples!
 
I would try and get some samples of different pellets (some piggies like on more than the other)

You can also try softening some of the pellets with boiled water, then leave to cool. This definatly tempts my boys.

If not, hopefully someone will be able to advise on musli.
 
He is selective feeding - picking all the bits out that contain no nutrition, the pellets have Vitamin C. I'd assume as long as Harry gets Vit. C from veggies etc. would leave alone although better to try and wean him off them. The flaky bits are apparently high in fat content (my piggies love flaked peas but I limit them due to this factor) They have Wagg Optimum pellets so if you have the crunch, would continue but maybe add some pellets and mix well - I am a bit biased with Wagg products x)
If Harry is happy, I wouldn't upset him too much :)

Thats a good idea about ringing, hopefully they'll send some :).
 
Supaguinea (also by burgess) is a good muesli. Apoligies if someone has already mentioned this, I didnt read the whole thread :)

Dandelion and nettle ?/ OH bought this today for some bizarre reason mallethead I asked him to look for the new FibaFirst by SS and he came home with this one - sent him back to get the brand I had WRITTEN down :x
 
That's the stuff by dods and horrels. It smells lovely and is courser than redigrass so better for the teeth. I think I know a supplier but can't get onto there website on my phone shall post later. But def worth every penny its compressed and filled 7 black bags :O
 
I wouldn't be too worried if he will only eat muesli type food, it should only be a small part of their diet anyway, so as long as he gets lots of hay & is given appropriate fresh veggies he will be fine. Wagg is preferable over Gertie, as Gertie still contains colourants I believe which are not good for piggies.

All my last piggies were fed on Wagg crunch. I now give the latest ones a mix of that & Oxbow pellets as they are made from Timothy rather than alfalfa.
 
I agree with what everyone has said. I dont think muesli has much in the way of fab nutrition and your piggie will selectively feed. Try lots of different ones. In my opinion some of the best brands are: Burgess Excel, Science selective (note they have brought out a new brand fibafirst i think its called), Oxbow and the Wagg nuggets are all good.

I am interested to hear about Wagg pellets. My pigs were on them after I first got them. I'dchecked the ingredients and to me they looked ok - added vitamin c, and in pellet form to stop selective feeding. They were also good for me as they were available in Asda so could be got with our food shop. As we live in the countryside and I car share with my hubbytobe, they were a good option. When I had to go to the vets with my pigs I was near enough scolded for feeding them Wagg - apparently it was 'too cheap' and those that used Wagg products didn't want to spend money. (I nearly turned round and said that I had just handed £70 over for you to look at my pigs, tell me what I already knew and not even be able to provide me with the full dose of what I need).

As a result of this I switched to Burgess Excel - which don't get me wrong is great stuff, the pigs dont go as mad for it though, but its a long way out of my way to get to a p@h to buy it.

There's nothing wrong with Wagg products at all rolleyes In fact, where some of the "better" & more expensive pellets are concerned, most include beet pulp in their ingredients, which is not good at all for piggies. Another particular brand sold in the UK which is very popular adds artificial colouring to their products which is very bad for them, whereas Wagg doesn't. I find getting Wagg pellets quite hard to do as we don't have a local Asda but hopefully will get some today for mine to try them.

Mine don't selectively feed as I feed them small amounts of both Wagg muesli & Oxbow pellets mixed in & the bowl is totally cleaned by the following day rolleyes
 
The only muesli feed I use now is Spillers guinea pig muesli - my pigs eat the lot! Though I do mix it 60/40 with Excel nuggets.

The babies also get a bowl of softened ones when they are tiny, as do the poorly adults as they seem to eat far more then. I also use the blackcurrant and oregano variety as they are much smaller and the babies tuck into those too.

I just managed to get the Wagg Optimum pellets & so far they seem to be liking them, so fingers crossed rolleyes However they are tiny pellets so although the piggies won't be able to "selective" feed, Chubster pig will be able to scoff at twice the speed as before so she is likely to get humungous lol :))
