Hey all! I've had my piggies for three weeks now and unfortunately they've had to live in seperate cubes of the original cage I got them in :(

Anyways, I made a base to put my absorbent layer and then my material and then fleece in (in that order) and I wanted to double check it's big enough for two boars. (I will be putting them in after I bond them this weekend)

Here's a photo. Made with grids I got off amazon.
It has a 3 by 3 square in the middle connected to a 3 by two and the half wall seperates a 2 by three area

What kind of base have you made to put the layers on?
Looks a great size for your two boys.

Am I right that the grids are 8 x 8 squares? I recently read on here that they are not recommended for guinea pig cages as they can get their heads wedged.

@Janice C I have old (large) salvaged signs much like the material coroplast to cut and shape into the areas, and then old towels for the absorbent layer. Also, I have one large fleece blanket (currently being used by the current cage) but I'll need another I'm willing to cut since it's oddly shaped. Finishing all this this weekend though

@Eileen's Mum I didn't know that. Is there any way I can block off the squares that have the potential for heads to get stuck in, so that I don't have to worry about my piggies being in pain while I'm out of the house? Like could I put a fleece layer like one blanket around he grids so they don't think of sticking their heads through ?

Perhaps cover the lower half of the grids in some wire mesh if the hole sizes are cause for concern.

To block to pigs from getting stuck in the grids, you can make the coroplast tray with taller walls or block off with extra things like plexiglass.

Why not remove the divider at the 2x3 end, and make a liner for 3x5? This way it won't be an odd shape to cut and you don't have to worry about pigs getting stuck in those two grids. Then you can use the 2x2 area for feeding.

Update...

I made a straight up 6 x 3 pen and put down my coroplast, then old towels as my absorbent layer. My fleece is a big big on the sides, (thankfully) so I'll pin it up so their heads won't get stuck. They had dominence issues so I'm about to bond them so if you wanna help with that then go see my post there :)

If they are adult pigs then they shouldn't get stuck at all. I have grids that are 8x8 squares and have 2 adult boars In it, they have never got their heads stuck. They even stick their noses through at feeding time and are no where close to getting stuck even if they shove hard to grab a piece of food. I personally would say that you only need to worry if they are quite young and small. Gage sounds great though so well done.

That's good to know. I didn't mean to panic anyone, I was just mentioning it as I had seen it on another thread and wasn't sure if it was just younger piggies at risk. My babies had to wait a while before they could go into my C&C as they were getting their heads wedged in the normal grids! Silly things

It's not so long ago that I'd to put an extra layer of chicken net up to prevent babies escaping into everyone else's area!
Within 4 weeks I was able to remove extra layer!
