so here is my problem ...
i got 2 male guinea pig from the local pet store around 10 days back, and according to the pet store owner they both are of the age of between 2-4 months ( nd they weights around 400 gms )..few days back i;ve noticed that thy were making roungh noises while wheeking.. (other thn ths ther were jst fine,no discharge, eating normally and were active) ..
but i ws bit worry because i thought rough noise ight be the early sign of uri..
so yesterday i took them to normal vet (of dogs and cats) as in my city thereare NO exotic vet(i live in bhopal(india)) as guinea pig are not yet common pets here yet..
but whn i talk to vet (on phone) he sounds bit knowlegable about g-pigs (though not specialist)... so yesterday i took my piggies to him just for common checkup.. and told about *** rough weeking sound to the vet ... he then checked them (no x-ray nothng just by touching and seeing them) and give both of them INJECTION ,,,,when i objected ,he said it is jst a minimum dose pain killer injection and not gonna hurm ** piggies in any way..and put some anti -mite powder on them(though i rubbed it off after coming home)...

after coming home one of my piggy is not eating much, and is not that active like before and he is having a puffed up coat and now only want to sit in the corner and relax...yes he is eating but not like before ...

is he is gonna be okay? m more worried now..
and "yes now i'm not gonna take him to the vet ",,if any one wanna object about i *** care because once i've already taken the risk of taking him to the normal vet ... i 've searced allover there are no exotic vet in my city and the nearest vet in my country is about 500kms away from my city ...

please help me ,,is my piggy is gonna be okay?
is little bit rough sound is normal?
how can i treat him and bring him back to normal without taking him to the vet?(as i've alrdy told * my problem of non-expertise vet)))
please help me.. will he be fine ?

The puffed up coat is a typical sign of a piggy feeling a bit poorly. It's a difficult situation you're in. We have other members from other parts of the world that have similar problems, it's a shame as it does make it difficult when suggesting what to do.

Do you know exactly what "pain killer" was given? This may help us decide if it's something to do with that or not. By the sounds of it your little pig does ideally need to go back to a vet if he doesn't perk up soon. Keep an eye on his eating. If he stops eating all together this is serious and you will need to supplement this. Also if you could weigh him daily so you can tell if he is losing weight that is very helpful as guinea pigs can go downhill very fast.

I hope he is ok.

green bell pepper is his favorite ..so he ate that with carrot and bermuda hay ( he is eating but not like before ) ...
i supplemented him with vitamin c ..
nd in evening he njoyed floor time with his brother .. but he is still not that active as before ...*every moment i'm praying for him to get well soon"

about pain killer .. when i asked him he said its jst a minimum dose which will relieve his pain (if he has any) ..
in my city there are no EXOTIC VET ... and normal vets are not that specialist enough ..(it sucks)..
i really do love and care 4 my piggies thts why i took the risk and took them to the vet ..now i can not do any bad with them by taking them to ny norml vet ..

I am sorry; it is not always easy in this country to find an exotics vet!

It sounds like you are dealing with a respiratory infection; which needs to be treated by an antibiotic like baytril or bactrim (NEVER a peni-cillin product; that is lethal for guinea pigs!)
Here is a list of safe antibiotics for your vet: http://www.guinealynx.info/antibiotics.html

You can help your guinea pigs by weighing them daily as long as they are ill; otherwise once weekly. that way, you know whether they are eating enough.

Can you describe in more detail what a rough noise is. Is it a high pitch sound or a low sound.
Your piggie will need you to hand feed it food. If you go to a human pharmacy ask for a 1ml syringe.
You can use their guinea pig nugget food to hand feed. Cover the nuggets in boilng water and leave for 15mins. Then cut the nozzle off your syringe so that it will suck up the food. Add more water if the food is too think. And now with your piggie on your lap, hold his head with one hand, bringing him into your chest if he's scared and then put the syringe in his mouth between his front teeth and his cheek. It can be difficult at first but keep trying. 3-5mls every one to two hours is best at first.
Puffed up is not a good sign, unless you can get the right medication very soon and you can syringe feed as soon as possible, as heartbraking as it is to say, your piggie has a poor prognosis.
I'm so sorry your in such a predicament and hope your vet will give you antibiotics. Can you not take the piggie back to him and ask for some some diagnostics and antibiotics. A safe antibitioc for piggie is Septrin or Baytril and a safe painkiller is metacam.

everyone thnkew so much for your replies ... he seems much better now :) ..he is eating (though he has become bit picky) ..he still loves his bermuda hay!
and he has started replying on my voice :) yes ! to me he seems better ..
he was never a regular drinker thts why my mother used to feed him cucumber, and properly washed vegetables (with drops of water on them)..m supplementing him with vitamin c..

and yah forgt to mention he was on doxycyclinc (3 doses)and benedryl (i consulted with vet of other city) ... aftr that i took him to this normal vet who injected him some kinda painkiller ...{:|

and believe me guys vets of my city are not at all specialised in guinea pig ...

about sound!..my piggies are making a low sound (with something coming like "hissss") ..when i discussed about this with vet .. he said they have no signs of respiratory problem .. *fingr crossed*

but to be on a safer side i'm keeping an eye on them .. and praying every second for thr long life :)

okay so i have 2 questions is doxy is safe for my piggies ?
do i need to give them pro biotics ?
