I am new to having guinea pigs and I have a boy and 2 girls, and I was.just wondering if anyone could tell.me if my guinea pig is neutered because I him from a petco and I heard that they neuter their animals and to me he looks neutered I was wondering if anyone could confirm.

We cannot know whether your piggy is neutered, and also as a UK based forum we would not routinely know Petco's policies. It would be unsafe to rely on what you have heard unless and until you have proof of a neutering taking place.

How old is he? Boars are usually only neutered after they are 4 months of age once the testicles have descended.
If he is under four months of age, then his testicles won't have descended so they would not be visible, thereby falsely giving him the appearance of being neutered. However, any unneutered boar over three weeks of age is fertile, so it would be best for you to immediately separate the boar into a separate cage immediately and put the sows on 10 week pregnancy watch.

You can see a vet to check whether he has been neutered.
If he hasn't, then he will need to continue to be kept separately to the sows until he has been neutered and had the six week post op wait to become infertile before being able to be bonded back in with the sows. However, if the sows are pregnant, then you would know by that time and would have to look to make alternative living arrangements depending on the sexes of any pups

Pet shops dont neuter animals. Thats why shops like petco and petsmart only sell one sex. I would consider him intact until a vet tells you otherwise.

Rescues do neuter. I would take him to a vet to confirm.

Petco does not neuter their animals; I used to work there. Please separate the male from the females.

Please have him vet checked to be sure before putting him with your sows (if you have done so already, you will need to remove him immediately and have your sows on a 10 weeks pregnancy watch) but I’ve never heard of Petsco neutering their animals

I hope your vet can tell you if he’s been neutered or not. Separate him until you know for sure. I hope your sows aren’t pregnant. Keep us posted. 😃

If he's young, his testicles may not have descended yet, making them hard to see, but he can still get your females pregnant even so. Please separate until you can speak to a vet and get this checked out. If he's been in with your girls (or they were in a mixed group of males/females at Petco), consider that both girls could be pregnant already, even if they are very young.

My cousin worked at Petco when we used to have them in Canada... they don't neuter animals. It's expensive for them and it's all about the bottom line, unfortunately.
