Hi!

I just bought Sugar and Mocha.. 2 GPs from Pet shop a few days ago.
The pet shop people told me that Sugar is a MALE, and Mocha is a female ( not 100% sure because she's too small size).

Mocha is about the size of errrm... oversized hamster? Is this normal? I'm afraid she is malnutrition or something... becos she reallie look so small as compare to Sugar!

But Mocha is always eating well... sit on top of the food bowl and eat... wheek quite a lot. So i supposed Mocha is healthy right?

But lately when i did a check to re-confirm Mocha's gender (did a check a few days ago.. my sis who used to keep a GP told me that its a boy.. and as reference to lots of website, there's a "dot" on top of the Y.. so i guess it's male right?)

Mocha is always fidgeting when i attempt to check his "private".. i'm wondering issit the way of I hold him that is real uncomfortable?
Mocha's bottom ( the hair below) is wet.. and makes me wonder what is happening? The hair is like so messy at the bottom and wet... this doesn't happen to Sugar though..

As mocha is dark brown in colour and i got difficulty checking his "private" to reconfirm.. doesn't wan to "risk" them breeding.. as Sugar is 100% a male..

thanks!
Hope to see some advices.. cheers!

Hi,
You need to weigh Mocha daily if you are worried to see how much weight she puts on.
Also why did they pet shop sell you a male and a female? As obviously they will start to breed! You need to confirm Mocha's gender ASAP and separate them until you know for sure.
Is Mocha long haired? Maybe worth a visit to the vets to get him/her checked out and the gender confirmed.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I agree with Katie you need to keep them seperate, males can reproduce from 3 weeks and females from 4 weeks. Mocha may look smaller because she is younger.

Here is a link with pics for sexing guinea pigs http://www.cavyspirit.com/sexing.htm

hello, welcome to the forums from me and the girls in oz. :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: i would definately weigh mocha every day or at least once a week to keep an eye on the weight. and i would be taking both piggies to a vet or rescue centre to get them checked over and sexed correctly. as said mocha could be smaller due to age or might have been the runt of the litter. welcome again and welcome to the wonderful life of guinea pigs! BE WARNED THOUGH GUINEA PIGS ARE ADDICTIVE! hoping you get your fur babuies sorted out. hugs and cuddles :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Thanks all! for all the welcome =) i'm glad i didn't come to the wrong forum.. hehehe, u all are real friendly :smitten:

Yupp... i think Mocha is "new" at the pet shop that day when I went.. the pet shop people checked on Mocha and said its difficult to see whether she's a male or female.. but she think mocha is a female, about 1 month old. and Sugar who is bigger in size, is about 1 and a half month.

And i was very worried when i realised Guinea pigs can breed even at 5 weeks.. so yupp..to re-confirm the gender of Mocha, i did went to the cavyspirit.com and it seems that Mocha is actually a male! My sis and I confirmed it.. with those pictures posted in cavyspirit.. but i'm still worried.. so i went to check on Mocha again just a few hours ago.. and its like Mocha's hair at the bottom and the "private" parts is too messy and wet for me to see anything ?

I changed my bedding almost daily and Sugar is soooo clean.. but why is Mocha so wet? :-\
I'm wondering issit the difference in breed.. Mocha is a a dark brown/black Abyssinian..

Yup i would take them to the vet and have a check ASAP.. however i'm afraid that the "transportation" process is not good for Mocha.. since she's only so small =(
I don't want to get my GPs startled or frightened by the journey to the vet.
Hmm... so what should i do?

If Mocha was in a dark box with hay she should be fine. The amount that pet shop guineas get moved around anyway (From breeder to pet shop, from back of shop to front) - a trip to the vets won't hurt. Hope she/he is ok.

Sounds like Mocha might be a long haired breed. Take them both to the vet, in seperate carriers and ask them to confirm the sex. If they are indeed different sexes you need to either get a same sex companion for each of them - please rescue next time as this will guarentee guineas health and sex! - or wait for 6 months to have the male neutered before he can live with the female.
good luck

Because Mocha is soooo small size, the pet shop ppl originally told me its a risk to buy Mocha... because there are some customers who bought GPs back home and the GPs got "startled" by the journey and shaking of the box.. and eventually died.
So that time i took a Taxi home from petshop to home =P they are back home safe! hehehe..

Yup i will bring them to the vet to confirm their gender & to check out their health =)
Thanks all!

;)
