i just posted a couple hours ago about my pig Prima’s extreme and rapid weight loss. she is now 492g. earlier this evening she was very frightened when i found her in her cage, running away from me when i showed her parsely. she normally will go up to me by herself to greet me. she did not eat the parsely at all. she was eating earlier today. right now i have her in her playpen and I'm staying up with her. she seems to have alot of trouble eating- shes showing interest in food, but she cant chew or doesnt seem to have the energy to chew so i break a few bits off to feed to her. I'm not sure if i should give her critical care because I'm scared she will choke. I'm not sure if she can swallow because sometimes she will spit her food out. she is still drinking water and moving around. she has diarrhea which is a huge warning sign but i cant drive and have no ride to bring her to a 24 hour vet. i have an appointment tomorrow at 3:45pm but it is currently 3:37am and I'm not sure she will make it. she keeps trying to sleep and i watch her belly as she breathes and she breathes rapidly one second and slowly at another second. she is very lethargic. i cannot bring her to a vet until tomorrow. what do i do? i dont know if shes in pain and i dont know what to do. how do i make her comfortable? do i feed her? will she choke? please help

another thing- is she having seizures? she lays on her side and seems to be sleeping but she is twitching violently and her eyes are moving all around and I'm so scared

it looks like shes gasping for air every minute or so I'm just gonna keep talking to her

It may be worth ringing the vet back and asking them to fit you in sooner if you describe how she is I’m sure they will, when my dog was very ill they saw her sooner than her appointment. I can’t offer any advice I’m afraid as I’ve only had guinea pigs for 1 week but I’m sending her lots of get well vibes let me know how you get on at vets. Xx

thank you ❤️

You need to see a vet as a life and death emergency. Every minute you wait, especially if you aren't syringe feeding her, is a minute closer to death. If you wait til your scheduled appointment then I fear she will not make it that far. Please try to syringe feed her, she needs to take something in. How long has it been since she has been unable to eat?

I am sorry but your piggy is very sick. Could you ask a friend or relative to take you to the 24hr vet as she really needs help as soon as possible.

Keeping you and your piggy in my thoughts.

shes been ni

shes been nibbling on hay and a bit of pellets but i have absolutely no way to being her to a vet, i will try to syringe feed her

Nibbling a bit of hay and pellets is not enough to keep her guts moving and stop her organs from shutting down. Can you not get a taxi to the vet? I had to do this before I drove to get from one side of the city to the other

If she is gasping for air, she is close to death. You are not going to be able to syringe feed her now. Either keep her very comfortable or get her to a vet, so they can help her over Rainbow Bridge.

Unfortunately, from my own experience it does seem as though she may be nearing the end. I know it's hard to watch. ((HUGS)) to you. If she rallies through the night, it's definitely worth seeing a vet in the morning. Thinking of you.

i saw the vet this morning and she has a heart murmur and fluid in her belly and theres not much they can do. i just have to keep her comfortable at this point and I'm giving her all her favorite foods and i will try to syringe feed her as much as i can. thank you everyone for the advice

Sorry to hear this, and sorry to say this, but i think the vet should have put her to sleep, no guinea pig this poorly will be able to eat. Shes sounds like shes using her mouth to breath

i honestly felt like she should have been put to sleep as well, she cannot get in a comfortable position to rest and really isnt sleeping, she was so anxious before but right now she is nibbling on a few things, i just want her to be able to rest. I'm going to continue to stay up with her and talk to her and try to give her treats and cuddle with her. they said if she has a seizure longer than 30 seconds i should bring her back to be put to sleep.

Bless , i feel for you both. You can treat heart conditions in gpigs though. But dont know too much about yours situation

does anyone have advice on how to make her more comfortable? she tries to sleep and lays down for maybe 5 minutes and then gets up. she hasnt slept longer than that since yesterday evening. i dont know if shes in pain. i have lots of blankets and food and a hut for her and she doesnt want to lay on my chest. i just want her to rest :(

Have they given a diuretic to reduce the fluid? I thought you said she was on her side and gasping for breath. I am a little confused!

Guinea pigs tend to sleep in sessions after grazing on hay.

at this point i dont think that would help, she keeps having seizures and her quality of life is low

I’m also wondering why the vet did not ease her suffering by helping her over the bridge. If he felt there was nothing he could do for her then my mind boggles as to why that terrible subject wasn’t even mentioned as a worst case scenario option.
It’s absolutely awful to loose a pet but it must be so much harder on both and Prima to watch her suffer like this. Fingers crossed she improves somehow but as horrible as it feels to say it, right now that outcome is not looking hopeful :soz:.

Have you thought about taking her back to the vets?

I hope she will be okay, but if not, it may be time for her to pass. You can either take her to the vet again or let her go peacefully at home.
To be honest, I have had four pets pass throughout my life and none of them was euthanized and I thik it's very peaceful that way, unless she continues suffering then it may be time

i took her to the vet today to be put down. she was suffering and i couldnt let that happen. i know shes in a better place. thank you for all of your advice

also i need to say this. some people who have responded to this thread have made me feel like absolute crap during this horrible time, making me feel like I'm not doing enough. i know my guinea pig and you dont. so please, have more respect next time someone here is losing a pig they love. not trying to start fights.
