I have had my two boars for nearly three years and I have always fed them Readigrass every day because the packaging says it is more nutritious than hay and is suitable to be fed instead of hay (or alongside it). Because of this and the fact my piggies have always ignored most types of hay I've put in their cage I never thought it was a problem to give them Readigrass, but now one of them has been having a bit of an issue with calcium build up which started in the bladder and now there are still some gritty bits behind his pelvis, which an X-ray at my exotics vet showed, and I am worried the Readigrass has caused it. I have cut down the amount of vegetables they have every day (and only give vegetables that are low in calcium), switched them to Brita filtered water and reduced the amount of pellets they have (Burgess Excel Blackcurrant & Oregano). I tried them with the Oxbow pellets but they wouldn't eat them and I am worried about cutting out pellets completely. The only hays I have found they will eat is either Oxbow Organic Meadow Hay (but it's very expensive for the small amount you get in a pack) or Excel Long Stem Feeding Hay (timothy hay). What are people's thoughts on Readigrass, because after a lot of online research all I have found are very conflicting opinions as to whether or not it's too high in calcium and whether or not it's suitable to replace hay / be fed every day?

Readigrass is quite high in calcium and is recommended to be given as a treat instead of being their main hay.

Agree with above, I give mine Readigrass, they love it but I sprinkle a handful over their hay at night to give them something to forage for, no more.

In terms of hay, have you tried the soft hay from www.dustfreehay.co.uk I don't know a guinea pig yet that doesn't like it and mine love it (sometimes in preference to their veg but they are very fussy eaters!) it may be worth a go. They do send out samples I believe.

B & M meadow hay - £3.50 for 3.5 kilo bag - I wouldn't give any ready grass if your boars are sludgy and I would feed a low calcium diet with filtered water and low calcium veg - (I had a boar who needed 4 bladder stone op removals ).
