Is She Underweight?

hi there, I am new to the forum and new to Guineapigs. I work in a nursery and we have two guinea's. I am concerned that one of them is underweight. I noticed today while the children were having guinea cuddles that her backbone and hip bones are very easily felt. Our other pig you can feel the solidness of where they are but you can't actually feel the bones. With Brownie I can feel every bump along her spine very clearly. She is around 6 months old and is 500g (we are monitoring their water and food consumption as part of a measure project and weighed and measured the pigs also)

Your little girl is a very low weight for that age and she should be much plumper. About 700-900g is much more normal for that age.

It would be good if you please had her checked by a vet and if necessary took her home to see what is really going on and how she is really eating. Please weigh her daily at the same time to get an idea of her actual food intake; it can be deceptive. It would also be good if you didn't just feed the girls once daily and left with full bowls, as most of it could go towards the companion.

Thankyou for your swift reply. My boss is currently on the phone booking a vet appointment. And Thankyou for the link about diet, I will get a read of that too.
 
PS: Please make sure that your vet also checks for the back teeth and not just the front teeth in case she has got a dental problem.

Thanks, I've added it in (I'm in Edinburgh) have read the diet link and will adjust there diet accordingly! (Ours get far too much fruit and not enough hay!) so glad I found this forum! (I have horses and know what a mine field nutrition is for them, but would never have imagined guinea needs would be as complicated!)
