I'm looking for some help because I don't know if something is wrong with our New Guinea pigs. We got Max and Rhino two days ago. Both of them aren't eating or drinking water. Rhino is fine with being held and even plays around some, but max is very scared, he doesn't come out of his hiding place often and has been constantly breathing really hard. They are both pooping a lot though. If someone could tell me what to do I would be so greatful for the help!

I had the same problem when i got my guinea pigs at 3 months old. I kept the water bottle, hay and food bowl really close to the hiding places. They mostly come out for a drink or food when no ones around. My Zazu ran out of hiding first day for some hay and pellets while the other sat as deep as possible in the hiding toy. Its quite rare for guinea pigs to be like Zazu but he hates human contact! They will eventually get confident. Try putting a blanket over the cage for a day so they can explore in the darkness and feel more safe to eat and drink. You might also want to check maxs teeth and see if they look normal and check his weight to see if its around 0.7-1.2 kg (adult). If under weight he might have upper respiratory infection and need to be taken to the vet. Zazu helped Diego to come out of hiding and have a drink and a nibble and really works with a blanket!

Hi!

As long as they are weeing pooing, they will be eating and drinking. They'll just be too scared at the moment as they need time to settle.
Weight them daily at the moment if you are concerned, to make sure they are eating and not losing weight.

The piggy with laboured breathing could just be stressed, but could also have a pain or respiratory issue- its best to have him checked by a piggy savvy vet to be safe.
