i was wondering if anyone had an oppinion on taking my 2 adorable boars on a 3 hour car journey to the west coast on very windy roads on friday the 13th a bad idea? i think that it will be okay as long as i keep a close eye on them and check that they are ok every few minutes. would that be clever or am i being stupid?!!malletheadmallethead they have been on a train journey from carlisle to berwick before though but obviously that is alot less windy and bumpy.

My guinea pigs have to travel the two hour journey up to my mother-in-law's every now and then, especially when they are on medication. They can do it.

Make sure you give them a good portion of fresh food before you leave, so they are full and not thirsty during the trip and will doze off through most of it. In my experience, most piggies won't touch much food during the trip and it will take them a day or two to settle in their new place. Guinea pigs haven't got a puke reflex and can't get travel sick.

We travel to Nottingham nearly every other weekend and we take the pigs with us. It is a 2 hour journey and my 4 have always been fine. They eat before we leave and travel in 2 pairs in cat carriers on the back seat. They snooze for most of the journey.

Mine go on 4 hour bus rides fairy regularly and are fine...

Is your pair really stable? Usually they take comfort in eachother during travel, but some boys are not thrilled with closeness. Bring a spare box of some kind (doesn't need to be another carrier) so that you can separate them if the start getting on eachother.

And lots of cucumber for hydration!

When I cuddle Charlotte she snuggles under my chin and talks/squeaks to me. It is her favourite place to be. I was singing her favourite song the other day and she started licking my hand.

As for the OP I would have thought that they would be ok. I take a little bag of veggies with me if I need to take the girls a long distance so they dont eat all of it at once.

I got Moxie in Dublin and had a three hour train/car journey home with him, when he was only 5 weeks old. He of course, was squeaking the whole time and probably freaking people out on the train :)) you're not meant to take cats or dogs in the train carriage but they said nothing about guinea pigs! Anyway, he didn't seem to mind at all, I just had him in a carrier with a lot of hay. I got him out for a cuddle every now and again, made sure he had enough air and wasn't too warm, and just looked in on him every 15 minutes or so I guess.

well not literally cuddling but when you hold them and stroke them then they feel a lot more relaxed.

Yeap Heath and Heston came from the norfolk coast so it was just over two hours from us, so i think your boys will be fine. I always make sure i give them some watery veg when i leave and sometimes i'll have a few cucumber sticks in a pot should we hit traffic and theyre in transit longer than expected.

Mine travelled all through Skye, then all the way up to the north tip of Sutherland, they did fine, and its only windy roads up here! :)

Last year I took my boar from Edinburgh to Sheffield on the train - 4hrs. On the way back our train terminated at Newcastle, we had to wait 45mins in the station, then all pile into a connecting train with no seats and I sat with him in the section by the toilet with 2 scary drunks who wanted to 'play with him'.
But he was fine. Journey back took almost 6hours and it was cramped and hot. Obviously not ideal but he managed it.

I also drove my pair of boars almost 5hrs home last christmas - put the whole cage in the car. They didnt come out much but I stopped halfway and gave them damp veg to keep them hydrated. They just snoozed the whole way.

They are house pigs though, and have moved house (due to my terrible luck with houses) about 7 times. They are used to car journeys and used to noise and bustle.

mine get taken on lots of little short journeys and some longer ones, they tend to snooze every time. I am sure they will be fine, like everyone else has mentioned, just check on them periodically.
