I am not asking you all to big me up here, but over the last few days i have got scared and having doubt about re-opening up my rescue.

Just going to take a lot of money and time(which i am more than happy to do infact i really want to do it)to set it all up, and i'm a bit scared it won't take off like last time and will be a waste of time and money.

Is there a need for another rescue on the Herts/Beds boarder?

yes...I have often wondered where piggies might have gone since you stopped rehoming.

Have you thought about your rescue being run like mine via the rspca, they pay for vet bills, could claim the food but dont but i'm sure they would be willing to help,I know people knock the rspca but its all been good for me over the last 8 years,I dont often agree with their policies but my contact with them is mostly paperwork.

rspca west suffolk branch.

to be honest since joining this forum last year I have seen posts of so many surprise pregnancies and large rescues that I wouldn't hesitate to say that another rescue anywhere in the UK would be very busy

i used to foster for the RSPCA (rabbits) though i enjoyed this there is nothing like running your own rescue your way and having the say over it.

Sadly, i think there are always going to be lots of guinea pig's that for one reason or another end up in rescue's, usually on here we hear how full to capacity their rescue's are etc, so yes i do, if you have the time, effort and money to spare and the satisfaction makes you happy then why not, without kind, willing people like you so many animals would have been left to die or just put to sleep. x

There is most definitely a need for another rescue, especially in your area.

It gets so hard to find a rescue that can be recommended as it seems so many rescues breed from the rescued pigs; are connected to breeding/showing but hide the fact; don't carry out a full pregnancy watch and so home pregnant pigs; don't follow recommended cage requirements for rehoming; don't have indoor/ good shed for winter accommodation at the rescue; don't give good owner-back up/support or take pigs back if the family's circumstances change; don't seek vet care as a matter of course; don't homecheck potential adopters; home single pigs to live a solitary life.

Oh gawd - the list is almost endless! It means that finding a rescue that has good standards is hard but luckily not impossible, so having another to add to the list would be wonderful. Do think long and hard though Sue as once you open your doors you will most certainly be busy.

Sadly, there is still a real need! There have been quite a few occasions when I was struggling with not having a good rescue to recommend North of London. You are sadly by no means the only rescue that has closed; there have been quite a lot. :(

Contact Suzygpr or Flips re. Piggy Bank, and you will see what is going on!

i was always so amazed at the stories i would get when someone rehomed their pigs to me. Someone gave me their 4 year old piggie, the mate had died and they decided they didn't want 'her' anymore. Well on inspection the girl turned out to be a very well built boar. 4 Years with him and they never noticed how well endowed he was. Some of the stories will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up.

I had an on going debate with someone who decided they were going to 'get' a pair of my piggies,(their words) Their hutch was 4ft by 18 inches, i said i wouldn't rehome to that as too small. The minimum is 4x2. They got so stroppy saying it was 6 inches off that so whats the problem. They really didn't get it, I tried explaining how they would feel if they had 6 inches taken off their bed, but even that didn't work. Needless to say they did NOT 'get' a pair of my piggies.

Thanks for you opinions, i needed it confirmed really.x>>

There's always a need for more rescue space - particularly experienced rescuers who know what they are getting themselves into. If you don't want to deal with annoying people you could always provide overflow oe pregnancy watch services for for one of the others :)

I honestly think it would be a great idea I really struggled to find a rescue in Hertfordshire(I'm in wgc). Where are you based if you dont mind me asking?

If you feel like it's something you want to get back in to then go for it...
Your experienced and know exactly how it works... So you should fall straight back in to the swing of things... :)
Rescue spaces are always needed... I'm chocka at the min... Have seven piggie spaces left and that's it I'm at capacity for bunnies now though...

As Suzy said earlier it's getting harder and harder to find a good rescue these days... One that homechecks and has adequate cage sizes and is genuinely in it for the animals and not them selfs etc...

If you go ahead with it I'll keep my fingers crossed for a quick and easy start and I wish you luck in the future... :)

I'm from Stevenage originally, I know there's quite a few members from the area and finding a rescue has not been easy for them.

Through the Piggy Bank we have a network of rescue support - cavy savvy members that want to help during rescue situations, provide transport help, short/long term foster spaces, homechecking help and even help at the rescue itself. It is proving very effective at providing local help when needed, often at short notice when rescue situations arise. It means not feeling like you are doing it all on your own and those that want to be involved in rescue have the opportunity, even if they are not able to run a rescue themselves.

i'm from Stevenage orginally as well, what a small world.:)

I lived in Shephall, went to Heathcote school which is closing soon. My mum still works there and will lose her job, though she over retirement age, so will retire gracefully lol

Any chance youll be moving near swindon before reopening? We desperatly need a piggy rescue within some kind of sensible reach. I have nowhere to recomend to people atm, and its not like were in the middle of nowhere either... :(

I would say, if there isnt one in your area there is always a need. Rescues like suzys are overflowwing so you could easily take on some piggies from over flowwing rescues to home in your area, even if there isnt a need for piggies to be rehomed to you (which I'm sure there is)

That's a shame not having a rescue near you. If needed i would travel once re-open, or could always meet halfway, if needed.

Its not so much me in need, I'm at my limit with two (hertford would actually be awesome for me as we have alot of family round there, so i may be calling in on you some day)

Its more when my little sisters friends parents ask me about piggys (I'm the piggy girl) I try to give as much advice as possible, and mainly they take it but MOST people wont travel over an hour to the nearest reputable rescue when there are 3 pets at homes less than ten minutes away. There is one very nice rabbit rescue who occasionall have piggies in, but not very often, the RSPCA advice round here is often worse than P@H so i dont really bother, And the only other animal shelter has just been shut down for animal cruelty. *sigh* Fun and games.

Back to the point, I think it would be very very usefull to have another trusted rescue in the UK.

hope i didn't offend you, i didn't think it was you who needed a rescue, Meant more if there were piggies needing urgent rescue your end.
haha i am known as the piggy lady as well

How funny, I lived in the Pin Green area and went to Pope Pius XII primary, Chells Way. We moved to Wales when I was aged 11.

May as well share too, was brought up in Pin Green and Martins Wood. Went to Pin Green JMI and Nobel.

Sue there is definitely a need for a rescue in this area. If people need to rehome their pigs they don't know where to go so end up dumping them in P@H. If you need any help if you do restart please ask as we would love to volunteer.

Thanks Helen, will certainly bare that in mind, i always needed help with naming them, when you have used most of your names it becomes quite hard (well for me anyway lol)

You may regret that, one of our pigs is called Beanbag :(|)

I grew up in Stevenage. Chells until 5 then St Nicks until 12, then Biggleswade. Went to Giles and Noble.

Haha, Dont worry, its fairly hard to offend me. :)

If i ever hear of any, I will let you know but I'm not really in the loop. I try not to look on preloved etc, mainly because if i found any in need i would be really hard for me to do anything about it.

Unfortunatly, I dont drive, I live with my parents, who may help out in an extreme emergency, but not on a regular basis, and I'm not sure they would apreciate too many extra cages. :)

I remember seeing her on your website, the name made me laugh, not surprised she got snapped up.

I say go for it! It's always nice to see rescues around Hertfordshire. :)

Our best name was Diddy Panda Fluffball the Magnificent, aka Diddy Panda, Little Panda, Little P and Panda Pops.
