My fellas guineapig was rushed to the vets yesterday because of crusty eyes, refusal to eat and liveless - it was apparantly squeeling in pain when touched. My fella was @ work half way thru a 40hour shift so his aunty took it 4 him. The vet took 1 look at it and said it was Guinea pig flu and was suffering so needed to be pts 8.... I'm not disagreeing with the fact it was pts because by the sounds of it the piggy had shut down its just this ' piggy flu thing ' thats got me. I can only think the vet was trying to say it was a cold/virus and it was taken the wrong way :S

Please if any1 has had dealings with this or knows if its a true thing. Fergie the piggy was sharing with her mum so if is it contagious is she in danger and also they are in a stack of cages with other guinea pigs in :...

Thanks

It sounds very much like your guinea pig has URI - upper respiratory tract infection. It is deadly if not treated or if you wait for too long; the quicker the better the chances of survival which are VERY good in the early stages.

However. I can't help feeling that you may want to look for a more guinea pig savvy vet.

Here is more information on URI:

^ i think she's saying the pig was put down, but (OP) it's important you get your other piggie to a better vet soon if it's infectious.

Sounds like a misdiagnosis by that vet, may well be a respiratory infection but everything else is a bit off the mark. PTS is drastic, I've got a pig through pneumonia and she really was on deaths door. You just need the right medicines and to catch it early enough.

Has the pig been PTS already? If so, I'm very sorry, if not, do find another vet ASAP. :)
