Is this a fungal infection? Advice needed

He is a lovely little boy and no not yet but he is definatly going tuesday. From what people have said and what ive looked at online it does sound like ringworm :( shame he cant be with his new friend on christmas but dont want to risk anything and spreading the infection

Oh poor little baby. Ringworm is awful as it is so hard to get rid of. Where did you get him? Lots of guinea pigs from pets at home seem to have ringworm.

Piggyfan - the OP has given all the details at the beginning of this thread.

From the pics I have to say he looks bigger than 215g. Are you certain your scales are accurate? I know he's mostly fluff though so his little tiny body may just be well hidden by all that hair.

I cannot find his pic in the new born pics on the breeders website (even though they have 14 litters listed for November alone!). Can you spot him?

My scales are only accurate to the nearest 5 grams, not the best but he is very light. As he is a peruvian he does have a lot of fur and you can feel his back hips. He has a bit of a belly underneath but not much, in the picture he is hunched up.

Suzy- his picture isnt up there anymore just looked, may be because the whole litter has been sold.

Sorry this is taking so long never uploaded pictures to a forum hopefully this will work:

This is him in my hand:

The bald patch, a few others on him of a similar size:

He is one lush piggy x)drool

Today I only found 1 tiny little scab thats fallen off now, the rest of the bald patches just look dry and flaky. Could it just be dry skin and if so would he need to go to the vets tomorrow? Sorry but I have never had this problem with guinea pigs before and dont no much about it :/

The condition is not getting better - it is part of the process - the patches grow bigger as the fungal spreads.

Here's some pics of some pigs that received no treatment until they arrived at the rescue - despite their owner knowing it was ringworm and using home remedies.

This is mite infestation left untreated.

Please take him to the vet - you can stop your pig suffering the way these poor pigs did.

Ok then just checking because my mum thinks its just dry skin and will heal fine since he's eating and being active and putting on weight thought I would check on here again but will definatly get him to the vets tomorrow.
Thank you Suzy and everyone else thats helped.

Hiya- I've heard from the Southend rescue.

"I would recommend Shoebury vet centre, 01702 299554
they are part of the earls hall group, they have a great cavy savvy vet there, his name is James."

Just got home from taking Harley to the vets and he has been treated for mange mites but will be going back in 2 week for a check up and if it hasn't cleared up it could be fungal.

Been told to keep him inside and at the moment I have been making do but have not got a good indoor cage so if anyone could recomend one thats not to expensive but a good size for 2 guinea pigs (just incase I need them both inside at some point) that would be good :)

hello,
just got caught up on this thread and first i wanna say how freaking cute your pig is! i just melted when i saw his pic in your hand x) glad you got him to the vets, and hopefully they'll get him all straightend out. if it does turn out to be a fungal like ringworm, feel free to send me any questions you might have; i have some experience with ringworm as my little piglet had it twice. good luck, and welcome to the forum!

Thank you, I'm hoping its just mites and will clear up in a couple of weeks. The vet said that if it doesn't clear up it is fungal and that it will take skin samples sent off for lab testing to find out what type, dread to think how much that would cost :{

when piglet had it the first time we went to the vets and they did a visual exam, skin scrape lab test, and given a course of antifungal meds. i cant remember exactly how much we were charged but the total bill was in the $120-140 neighborhood. (sorry i dont know how that translates into English currency) it was farily expensive for me because i was a poor college kid, but worth every penny to get him healthy again :)

Thats not as bad as I was expecting but still alot and I'm also a college student, any money I get usually goes on my animals haha but they are worth it! My dad wanted to take him back to the breeder, only had him a week and I'm completely attatched to him! If he does need the lab tests I will find a way to pay for it

Happy New Year everyone!

Harley is seeming a lot better and his fur has started growing back and from the outside( I read that if it grows back from the middle of the bald patch its a sign of ringworm) so I think it was just a case of mange mites which is now clearing up.

Thanks everyone for your help just another question:
Once he is all better how likely is it for mange mites to come back?

Also how long should he stay seperated indoors from Harvey?

He won't be able to go out doors until April/May as he will have adjusted to the indoor temperature and such a drop could kill him.

Just weighed him again and he is 285 grams and he will be 8 weeks old in a couple of days.

And its not a problem having him indoors till the april/may he has a nice c&c cage now in my room so I can keep a close eye on him :)

Hiya - can you please weigh him again and check that your scales are correct. 300g is the weight of the average 4 week old piggy and below the rehoming minimum of 400g for a 6 week old.

Suzy x

Could it also be possible that you were lied to about his age? Could he infact have been younger than you thought when you purchased him?

I am aware he is really underweight that was my first concern but he is going back to the vets next week for another treatment for mange mites. He is eating and drinking well and is putting on weight.

Did weigh him again and he came up 285 grams, although my scales are only correct to the nearest 5 grams but its still enough to get a rough idea and that he is underweight.

He has got slightly bigger but not alot since the photo I posted of him.

I went back and checked your initial post for his previous weight - he's gained well considering how small he is and his condition.

You've done a grand job with him.

Suzy x

Thanks, some people have suggested hand feeding him but I havnt done this as he is eating well on his own and has become really active (he's popcorning round his cage right now :) ) Didn't think it has been necessary and I know it can be stressful for them.

Just wondering, have you been able to pop some mushed up pellets in his cage? Piggies often love to tuck into this. Not all the time necessarily, just as a treat. :) I have found with my boys, after they have the mushed up pellets once, they nom the normal pellets much faster for the next week or so. (The mushing up is done by pouring boiling water over a handfull or so of pellets, leaving to cool then mashing with the back of a fork)

Sounds like your doing a good job, keep up updated!
