Is this a good diet?

First, a quick question. Are you supposed to feed the piggies in the morning? Because that would work out better than at night.

How long do you leave the veggies in the cage? Until the night?

I was thinking of getting this food

Nutriphase® Guinea Pig Food

and this hay

Kaytee® Timothy Hay.

And then I was going to have two veggies a day, like lettuce and carrots one day, and then carrots and cucumbers the next. To keep them excited for each meal.

What are some good veggies that don't spoil quickly?

Sorry for all my questions. x3

I feed mine hay and 5 veggies in the morning which includes 1 green and 1/8th green pepper each in the morning.

Early evening top up all pellets, more hay and 5 more veggies.

I use excell pellets and Stalkier hay Timothy is so expensive and I 14 pigs and 4 rabbits at the mo. :)

Look through the food section for veggies, they shouldn't have a great amount of one veg, the days are gone when all we give them is carrots, lettuce and cabbage. :)

My guinea pig has a big bowl of 4-5 different veggies every night, with access to hay, dry mix and water at all times.

If you decide to do it the way you've planned, I'd recommend taking out the un-eaten veggies from breakfast or the ones left over from the night at breakfast, because my piggie tends to shred them and put them over a nicely cleaned out the day before cage, and they start to smell weird.

Oh, Flashie, you're my age! ^^

Oh, can I just do the same four/five veggies each day? Instead of switching two at a time?

Hehe, yeah i am. I'm just 14 ;)

You could do the 4/5 same veggies everyday, i suppose. This is just my opinion, if someone gave me the same 4/5 veggies everyday for a while, how sick of them would you get? I'd recommed 3 different everyday and and keep chopping and changing in this situation. You never know, the piggie might end up not liking some of the veggies. I stocked up with carrots this year (seasonal veggies, cheap and stuff) and it turns out my Flash turns his nose up at them and really dislikes them!

I know a lot of people in the US who keep piggies and I'm told that Nutriphase is one of the worst piggy foods out there. It has nasty preservatives and is full of lots of other fatty things that pigs don't need. Oxbow Cavy Cuisine is readily available over there so I'd look for that.

P.S. Any chance you could stop making your posts teeny and centering them because it's hurting my eyes :))

Oh sure, sorry. It's just a habit, I do it on all forum. x3

So maybe three a day, and keep switching one out for another?

And really? Goodness. @.@ Any US food suggestions?

What bedding are you looking at, and what size will the cage be? (Beware, cage dimensions for store bought cages usually show the size of the outside of the cage, not the inner tray).

It depends on what bedding and the cage size which will determine price and how well it will last.

Great job on doing research beforehand. :)

i have a thick layer of newspaper on mine (a FULL paper) and woodshavings over. :)

I was thinking about getting Aspen Shavings and putting them over whole {not shredded} newspaper myself. How does it work for you?

Well, i just have random woodshavings for guinea pigs and no "famous and well known brand" They do the job, and thats what i want, but it really depends on what you'd feel safer with. I've just typed in aspen shavings for guinea pigs, had a look around and it seems aspen shavings can get quite expensive and another problem with aspen is that it is has no natural oils, which means it doesn't have much odour control, and i think you said they/he/she would go in your room, so just have a think about that. I really recommend the newspaper, no matter what for the bottom layer. I read if you just give them the newspaper, they can get infections around the anal area (after they have weed and something to do with ink)

Happy Holidays/Merry Christmas!
Rhiannon :))

The problem with using pine shavings (and even worse with cedar) is that they have very strong aromatic oils. Which is nice for you, but imagine having something like Vick's VapoRub stuck under your nose for your entire life. Rather unpleasant, no? Plus the oils can irritate piggies delicate nasal membranes.

I've noted that some people just use newspaper for the bedding (not shredded), with hay or other bedding (such as Carefresh sprinkled on top. If you put down six or seven layers of newspaper, then put a thin (maybe 1/2 inch) layer of a more expensive bedding on top, you could easily clean the cage every couple days (roll up the top layer of newspaper with bedding inside), in order to keep the odours down, and you'd still go through less bedding. By the time you get to the bottom layer of newspaper, give the cage a thorough cleaning, then repeat the cycle.

I did it with my Pigglywink, and one large bale of Carefresh ($18 Canadian) would last me almost a month.

Oh, so if I used enough newspaper, I can just do a thin, comfortable layer of Carefresh?

Yes, or hay, which serves the dual purpose of giving them hay to eat, as well as burrowing material, and using newspaper underneath makes cleaning a lot easier, especially if you go with something like a C & C cage, since you just have to roll it up and throw it away. Then, like I said previously, you just add a fresh layer of the burrowing material, and when you get down to the last one or two layers of newspaper, it's time to completely empty the cage and give it a more thorough cleaning. At least once a week, more often if necessary. It's a matter of keeping an eye on how the piggies are doing. If there's lots of urine, you might need to change it out more often.

I'd spread the Carefresh evenly across the cage, and Pigglywink would push a fair bit of it together into her house, and another pile in the back corner, which was where she did her toilet. I tried pleasing her once, by doing that step for her, and she sulked until I put it back as normal and let her push it in herself. Piggies are strange animals, but so very cute.

BTW, I'm really impressed with the amount of research you're doing before getting your guineas... very mature, and it's a good omen for what type of owner you're going to make. Congrats!

Awww, thank you. ")

And you've given some excellent information, thank you very much!
