As some of you may know I have 2 new guineas who are 6 weeks old - only had them since Friday. I noticed on one of them when we got home that some fur has gone under his eye....just had them out and I think it's got a bit worse. Then checked the other and he has a patch above an eye the same. Is this anything to worry about?

That looks like a fungal infection. I am afraid a vet trip is needed.

A trip to the vets, like the others have said is deffos in order I'm afraid :( xx

I agree. It looks like a fungal infection so please see your vet for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

In the meantime, wash your hands after handling them.

Try not to worry as it should clear up in no time once treatment starts.

Really? I'm gutted...seeing as I only got them on Friday I'm guessing they already had it. How do they get these things?

I'll take them tomorrow...

Poor breeding and living conditions. Pet shop piggies are bred in terrible carboard boxed sized conditions and inbred. Where you get them from is the nice part of their journey x

Oh really? I got them from a local lady who breeds them. Like I say I did notice it one Silky (the black one) when we got him home but didn't think much of it until I've noticed it seems worse.

Ah well...will get them to the vets tomorrow and hopefully they will be ok.:(

No No its not your fault. Its just one of these things that cant be helped. My original pig was a non-rescue piggie. I didnt know these thigns either. Whats important is your piggies are well loved now, which I'm sure they are :)

One of my girls had a fungal infection at 4 weeks old. Her mum had one before Ena had even been born so it can be past on in the womb. Ena came from a rescue but I was warned she may develop fungal when I adopted her.

Id personally contact the breeder and make them aware incase they end up giving more fungal affected pigs to people, if you've only had the pig for 4 days the fungal should have been noticed on Friday and the breeder should have really had noticed this.

Hope she's well soon, how did vets go?

Going to call the vets in the morning, so I'll let you know when we've been. I think I will let her know once we've been too. Poor little piggies...might explain why one of them seems grumpy!

Well...been to the vets and the poor little boys have mites! She's given me the stuff to put on the back of their necks and some anti biotics eye drops to put where they have been scratching.

She also advised to get vitamin C supplements for them as this is a very stressful time for them and they need all they can get.

Anyone had any experience with mites? Anything else I should do? I'm really annoyed as I got them on Friday so they clearly already had them.

Vets arent always good at skin infections, wouldnt be suprised if it turns out to be fungal!

The pictures really do look more like a fungal infection than mites due to the position http://www.guinealynx.info/fungus.html. Often mites and fungal will go hand in hand. Antibiotics will not clear a fungal infection, you will need to get a fungal cream and a shampoo, but I'm not sure which can be used near the eyes.

Whereabouts are you based? We may be able to suggest a cavy savvy vet that will be able to give you a correct diagnosis.

Thanks, I really hope it's not. Wasn't banking on spending £70 four days after buying them! Obviously I don't mind spending money to make them better but you know what I mean.

I'm in Kettering, Northamptonshire.

Is Kettering anywhere near Duston? As one of the most highly recommended guinea pig vets is there. Here's their website http://www.catandrabbit.co.uk/index.html
Simon Maddock is very highly recommended if it's possible for you to get there.

Also, I know some people feed childrens vitamin C tablets, but I'm not sure on dosage etc. Don't use the drops that you put in water as they can often cause the pig to stop drinking and you can't be sure how much they are getting. Some vegetables are high in vitamin C, such as bell peppers. Maybe have a nosey through the food sticky's and see if you can find something.

I hope this helps.

mites are very easy to treat and get shut of in my experience
but very uncomfortable for a piggy
if it is mites the topical ivermectin they gave you (was it xeno?) should sort that right out within 3-4 weeks.

if their condition doesn't improve within 2 weeks though you'll more than likely be looking at a fungal problem.
which from the pictures, it looks more fungal than mitey to me too, so going for a second opinion if you have the money would be a good idea. :(

Sadly, it is very common for piggies to come with skin problems when bought, but from a breeder i would have expected better

Vit C supplementation is best done with veggies in my opinion, a nice chunk of a sweet/salad/bell pepper should do the trick (for anyone else it would anyway. mine don't seem to like them at all)

but if you want to use something else then you can crush human vit C tablets into water and give them it orally with a syringe. you would need to work out the dosage though and it may be quite difficult

Thanks Pandora. Yes it is Xeno that they've given, also Fucithalmic for the bald/sore area around the eye.

I've emailed the breeder who has said she treats her piggies with Johnsons insecticidal spray, so to get some of that.

The vet seemed to think veggies weren't enough, but then if she's not a piggie expert who knows. I've got some bell pepper though, so that will be their treat today. I'll have a look through the food stickies too, thank you.

Duston is nearly an hour from here, but maybe worth considering if this doesn't clear up quickly. I'm assuming we're ok to still be handling them etc (obviously with good hygiene)? Also their fur looks all manky where the Xeno went on - I'll give them a brush later but is there anything I can do to sort it out, or should I leave?

So sorry for all the questions! :...

Personally, I wouldn't use a spray on guinea pigs, the Xeno should work perfectly fine though.

You can still handle them yes, just make sure you wash your hands well afterwards as ringworm is contagious. I'm not sure what you can do about the manky fur...it does tend to work it's way out within a few days. I think it's possible to bathe them 48 hours after the treatment has been applied, once it's all soaked in.

Hope this helps

It does help, thank you very much. I'll give them a brush and see how it goes - I think bathing them at this time as they haven't settled yet, might stress them even more. Thank you.

Agree with the others, looks fungal... dont blame yourself though you didnt know the problems some breeders can cause animals! Just get him to a vet :) .. he is gogeous by the way! I bet we will all love to see some more pigtures drool xx>>>

Ha ha - I'll get some more! I do feel so sorry for them and in all honesty they don't seem too happy today at all. Haven't come out of their beds and when I got them out to do the eye drops Silky (the black one) was literally shaking bless him.

I'm guessing I need to give the Xeno time to work though as only did it yesterday. Doesn't help they look like little grease balls now too! :(

I am sorry to hear all your little ones are going through. I would give them vitamin C for a boost. These are the ones I give my gang.

I crush one and put it on a slice of cucumber for each piggy. I know people say it is not needed but before I used the tablets my piggies would sneeze and now they rarely do.

Ah thank you...funnily enough I did a search around this morning and found these. They'll hopefully be here tomorrow. I think they do need a boost bless them.

They are outside and I am half tempted to bring them in for a couple of weeks until they feel better but I don't want to make them worse with the temperature difference...unfortunately we don't have a shed. Although they are away from drafts outside and covered etc.

I would bring them inside if it were me. I really hope they get well soon.
