Hi I have had my guinea pigs a week today. They are approx 10 weeks old. When changing their fleece yesterday I noticed on the puppy pads a slight pink tinge to some of the pee pads. I thought it may be from the newspaper underneath so decide to monitor it. Then I checked the new pads this morning and saw this.

I think this is blood I am going to try and get them into the vets today.

I am at work now I am going to separate them when I get home to try and see which piggy it is.

@Mezzle2121 No it's not.

Puppy pads are great for scaring owners into thinking their pigs are bleeding. It's the chemicals in the pad that's reacting with the pee to make it go that colour. Blood usually shows up with a red spot in the centre of the patch.

If you want to be 100% certan it's not blood then you need them to pee on something that doesn't change colour, like a white towel.

Omg @Jaycey I hope you are right. I am getting really scared. I think I might separate them for 24hours and see if I get the same results. I just don't want to leave them and something bad happens.

I've only had them a week and I love them too bits already.

@Mezzle2121 You don't want to separate them as it could adversely affect their bond.

Just get them out later for some floor time. Put down a white towel or white kitchen roll and watch for them peeing.

I've seen much worse staining on a puppy pad before, and I've had instances where my pig has peed blood on it. And your pigs are definitely not peeing blood. Try not to worry and enjoy them.

You could try to increase their water consumption a bit, especially in this warm weather. It'll dilute the pee more so it's not as brown on the pads.

I have been leaving them bowls of water and they have their water bottle but they just don't seem interested I have been giving them cucumber and wet veg to try and keep up their water levels up. Someone suggested watermelon. I will get some on my way home from work.

@Mezzle2121 no, it isn't blood for sure.. I also had an heart attack seeing a similar colour in my cage... if you want to be sure, spray the pad with peroxide hydrogen. If you see some foam it is blood,if not it is only the normal colour of the piggies' wee due to the substances of the vegs and the contact of them with the air...

That is a very good tip, thankyou for sharing it :) I'm going to get some to add to my piggy cupboard x

Thankfully the first time I saw the same stains on my puppy pads i'd only read a thread on this forum about the same thing a few days before so I knew what it was but I would have freaked right out if I hadn't read that thread. Good tip @rome_italy

Hi Reenie just wondering what it was with my post you were talking about. Just curious as any info I get is valuable thanks.
It was someone asking about blood on pads - I had said your post was similar. I think I got it wrong though, as everyone seemed pretty convinced that in that case it

OOPS - pressed the wrong button. As I was saying. Everyone seemed pretty convinced that in the other case it was actually blood.
