I was cutting my piggies' nails earlier and noticed Finlay's foot has this on the right and toe:

is this bumblefoot?

I thing this is the toe nail that fell off a year ago and it had started to grow back.

Finlay is otherwise OK. He's eating plenty, drinking OK. His poops are not always great but he seems fine. I've just booked him for the vets... I'm really worried, especially as I just don't have the money vot vet bills ATM. :(

oh my Bea has a toe nail like that on her front left paw yikes! I never thought anything of it other than it being a bit odd

I just don't know what to think and I'm totally panicking!

Where's Wiebke/Laura when you need them....

Don't panic!
Bumblefoot is on the pad (the bottom) of the foot.
I can't see exactly what it is on the toe but it could be a foot spur, again nothing to panic about.

I took the pic with my phone, not ideal... The nail looks like a piece of dried up poo but it IS the nail, it's much wider and not defined like another nail. I can't see the quick either.

Have you felt it? I've often come across this on my pigs and it's always been a bit of poop, they've obviously stepped in it, carried it around the cage and it's formed a bit of a cap on one or more toenails. Try giving it a wash in warm water.

If that doesn't help then as Katie said it could be a spur or something, but that doesn't look serious to me.

EDIT: Just seen your post about it not being poop. Hmm. I'm still saying it doesn't look serious. If that nail has come off before, its possible it's come back deformed in some way. It's worth getting it checked just to be sure. But that's not something that would worry me unless it was painful to them or it spread.

It doesn't look like typical bumble foot. Try and see whether it comes off, sometimes it's just dried on muck.
However, if you still suspect an infection of the soft tissue, see a vet. He will probably give you antibiotics. If it is not as bad as that, you can try aloe vera gel or cream or some other disinfecting/anti-inflammatory cream for local treatment. Finlay can have caught his rough nail on something and injured himself that way. His toe doesn't look swollen or infected, though!

Bumblefoot is an infection of the foot pad, usually the front paws as they are the weight bearing foot soles. It is rather more frequent in piggies that live on soiled, uncleaned, rough surfaces or are kept on wire flooring. http://www.guinealynx.info/pododermatitis.html

I'm going to have another look. I don't think it'll come off, but I'll let you know. I'm very iunsure of my vets although I know they try their best.

I feel so dumb...mallethead

I had a closer look, scratched it a bit with my nails and... ahem, the dried poop came off reveling a rather healthy-looking nail...

Not dumb at all! If you've never seen it, or never seen it look quite like that it's easy to think something's wrong!

I am very very glad it was only a bit of poop! :)

Poop caps; gotta love them. Personally I always think my pigs are trying something a little *new* to make their feet look lovely. They don't realise it's disgusting and it's always mummy that has to get them off... :D

now I have to phone the vets again and explain that, erm, well, actually he's OK. Oh man, I'm soooo dumb!mallethead

Phew, what a relief. I'm sure the vets will be happy to know the piggie is okay.. My lot often get bits of poo trapped between toes and pad. They are mucky little beast:(|):(|):(|)

honestly.... I'm always elbow-deep in poo... if it's not the two-legged one, it's the piggies!

Don't worry, we've all been there. :))
Much better to see someone calling the vets as soon as they've found a problem than leaving it.
Hector was terrible at getting mucky feet when I first got him. I had to soak his toes in a little bowl of water to get it off!
