I noticed this tonight . I' ve got a vet's appointment tomorrow but would be grateful for any advice
 
It is difficult to say whether it is fungal or just dry skin. Good that you have already got a vet appointment!

No, I would not treat any skin conditions before they have been seen by a vet, as that can falsify the diagnosis. It is much better to wait and treat appropriately with a proper product than to treat on spec. By the looks of it, it has not happened overnight, so leaving it for one more night is not going to make it much worse.
