Not the best lawn I know but will this make my piggies sick? They’ve never had grass before but was thinking to let them out this afternoon for 20 mins.

If not I can put them on the patio as I’m trying to introduce them to the outdoors gradually. Looks to be good weather wise here.

Give it a try. Ideally you start feeding grass some days before you put piggies on the lawn. If they eat a lot of fresh juicy grass, then please do not feed any water veg for dinner.

Make sure that they feel protected with a fleece or blanket over their run if they have never been on the lawn.

Feeding Grass And Preparing Your Piggies For Lawn Time

You need to introduce your piggies slowly to grass. Mine were on it for half an hour first of all then I increased it by half an hour each day until they were on it nearly all day. It took about 2-3 weeks to get them used to it.

Here they are! Still hiding in the shoe box that I took them out in! Poor babies are too frightened to come out yet! I’ve just put 2 pieces of Apple in too encourage them.

No concerns here, with eating too much grass. They didn’t come out of the shoe box. I tried again around 8pm when it was quieter but nope, they refused! I put the blankets in that have their scent too! I’m not sure what else I could have done? Xx

They are probably scared to venture outside as it is all new and scary! Just keep putting them outside and they will soon feel ready to brave the big outside. Try taking the fleece out that the hideys and shoe box are on so they get used to the feel of the grass under their feet. The plastic hideys get too hot for them you need hideys with two ends open on a hot day.

Thanks @Betsy! I’ll give that a try today xx

Definitely take @Betsy advice regarding removing the fleece, as soon as my piggies realised that they could eat what they were standing on they just wandered out of their hideys munching away.

Thank you! Ive put the fleece down for their scent and to prevent UTI’s.

I put Twilight down in a towel and she ran into the bottomless hidey on the grass (as suggested) and she stayed in there the entire time.

Heidi just stayed in the towel, that I put her down in (I didn’t have the heart to take the towel away, Although I did try to encourage her out but she said “No”.

I brought them back in after about 40 mins, I guess it will just take time. Might try again later today! They seem to become more playful in the evening xx

Mine have never had UTI's from grass and neither did my rainbow piggies who lived til they were 5.
That’s good to know! I guess it can happen if they’re left for a very long time. Our soil is a little damp, I do mollycoddle these girls a bit 🙈🙊😊.

Does anyone know if its ok to let the piggies out on the grass if the grass has been fed? I'm guessing not because of the chemicals, but id still like to be able to put them on the grass rather than the patio... or maybe i would need to wait a few weeks after the grass has been fed until I let them out? Thanks for any advice given :)

It depends what it says on the lawn feed box, but generally I believe it is mow it 3 times before you let the piggies on it. Someone else can correct me if I am wrong or confirm that I am correct. Mine are now on the patio after 2 weeks mowing the back garden and will be on the patio for around 2-3 weeks waiting for the grass to grow back.
