Yes; I know what you're all thinking. I've owned guinea pigs for about ten years now and should be able to tell the difference; but hey. I can't. So letting you guys help me.

Shuuuuuush. I got my first car yesterday; I'm all confused, and the receipt says hay. I'm checking.

So with new car I need to cut down on what I'm spending; and my local cowmills has really good offers on hay. Bought this, was told it was hay. My Mum is insisting that it's straw and I need to take it back. Asking you guys as you know better :P

I need sleep oh my god I can't believe I'm asking this but I'm 99.8% it's hay. Someone soothe me. I haven't given them any of this just
In case.

Its either awfully browny yellow bad quality hay or straw! I don't really know though!

That's why I'm not really keen on risking it and waiting to see what you think of it! If it's bad then I'll just drive to pets at home for sawdust (I kinda forgot I can do that now...but then again; I was so tried I couldn't even do basic maths at work so I think my brain has now gone) and go back to my old place for hay!

looks like straw, its not good for them when it's like that, too rich and it looks very old, so i wouldn't feed it to my pigs

looks like hay that is used to make silage (winter feed for cattle )
dos it smell musty (moldy)
woldent chance it on my pigs

as for should have known better ,
how were you to know ? you bought it in good faith!

l remember buying 2 bails of serposed Thimerty hay , l drove many miles to pick it up
and when l got there it looked like the stuff in your pic.
it was actualy hay that was ment for cow feed
l had already paid, so l gave it to a lady who had horses

My hay is like that, I risked giving them some and they turned out fine. I think it's hay (but mine isn't that bad its just yellowy and you know, i got it from pah too!)
Don't give them that one though, it's not good.

GIVE IT BACK. YOUR MOM IS 80% RIGHT

Thanks guys! I knew it looked dodgey!

I won't use it on my pigs; I'll give it to someone at college who has horses or something; they'll have more use of it than me. I completely forgot that I have a car and can you know...drive places?! Haha.

My friend said she'd take it as bedding so not that much harm done. The bag only cost me 2 pounds so not worth crying over it!

I thought it was straw, but perhaps it's brown close-cut hay? Either way it doesn't look like the best sort for pigs :) x

My nose is my best guide if I am in any doubt! Hay just smells different - sort of sweeter. Straw smells more sour. My local pet shops are quite used to me literally sticking my nose into bags;).

Don't know but even if it doesn't seem fresh enough to give to pigs. My piggies used to get sick on this one brand of hay that was less fresh. Also, maybe you can ask whoever is selling it if it's hay or straw?

:D Yup, it is definitely straw. The stalks are too broad and long for hay.
