I just got this guinea pig yesterday for my daughter from it's previous owner who could no longer take care of him. He posted such cute pictures of him and never mentioned anything being wrong with the little guy, once in my home I noticed this patch of missing fur and it looks scaly / scabby. I called the previous owner right away and he told me not to worry about it, it's just a birth mark. I am not stupid I know that's a lie! I was wondering if anyone on here has seen this before and knows what it is? I would like to know if I could treat it myself instead of going to the vet. Any advice would help thank you!

Welcome to the forum. Looks fungal to me, definitely a vets visit ASAP to be honest with you. If you add a location to your profile we may be able to recommend a vet for you.

You need a vet visit for an official diagnosis am afraid but it looks fungal to me. The vet may want to take skin scrape and culture it but please note that this only works when testing for ringworm. That looks more like one of the other types of fungal to me. My preferred method of treatment is with Imaverol dips. Let us know what the vet says and I will give you the link.

Does he seem uncomfortable at all?

Please could you confirm your location so we can tailor our advice accordingly.

This link will tell you the basics of the hygiene needed when dealing with fungal though is more ringworm specific.

It is possible that he could have a combination problem of fungal and mange mites in which case I would also recommend Ivermectin injections (a course of 3) as the most effective treatment.

He may also need pain relief too.
