Today Chippy was chewing the bars of his cage madly. Like he was going mental. It was terrifying. But then trying to stop him I put a piece of newspaper in the cage bars then he was ripping up the news paper frantically. It was terrifying to watch and I am so so scared that when I go on holiday next week he will hurt himself badly. Please help!

Mine might chew the bars if I've taken the other out before him, but otherwise I don't know - wait for someone more experienced to come along - they can help you

My piggies chew the bars if they want to get out. But they run free range in our living room so that's how I know why they chew the bars. They never do it all the time though, only when they try to get out when they know they can't, then they would give up after a few tries.

Some pigs are just chewers and others will chew when bored. Perhaps look into some more enrichment so he doesn't feel the need to chew the bars

Ok I'd say his cage is big enough being a 4*3 C&C cage

Mine are also chewers, one especially is now called Starlight Super Shredder. :)
They often rattle the cage like trapped prisoners which is definitely for attention.
One pulls on the water bottle so hard and tries to make it fall to the ground. I go over and say hi and have a chat and when I leave he still carries on doing it.
The other found some plastic corners that fit the cage bars together and decided to chew on these as well!
Sometimes it's an attention thing and other times it might be they just get bored; or its just one of those lovely annoying things I have to appreciate.

Our two chew if they’re ‘hungry’ (time for breakfast or dinner) or need more hay. Otherwise they don’t do it at all. And it’s actually 99% of the time the dominant one who chews.

When we first got little boar Theo he was a cage bar and plastic biter, but we bought him a carrot cottage and a haycube that he could chew safely and since then he leaves the cage bars alone! If you put a haycube in the place where the bar biting is happening most piggies will happily chew something more appropriate they find in the same place :)

When Bert gets excited about food there is no stopping him from chewing the bars. Neither him or Neville did it any other time. Since then they've had a new DIY cage (perspex is very hard to get your teeth around!)

You can probably put a cardboard box they can get inside and chew. I don't have a plastic house and such for my piggies. Most are cardboard boxes because it also substitute as toys for them. They can hide in it, push and rearrange positions easily and of course a chew toy for them. They love it!

Mini chewed the bars for the first time last night, hubby had gone through to the kitchen and I think it was Mini's way of saying "C'mon Dad, it's time for our veg"
