Almond is almost three months old. Physically, he's starting to look less like a baby and more like a boar. He gets really oily too so I check his behind twice a day for any hay or bedding that gets stuck, and his fur for boar glue.

Each guinea pig is different so I'm really stumped if I should be expecting these things from a young male guinea pig:

1. When it comes to food, his order of preference is: carrots, pellets, greens such as celery, timothy hay. He'll always eat carrots and he drags them to his hidey house for safekeeping. Sometimes he doesn't eat hay when it is in his food bowl, but he'll always eat it if the hay is on my hand. I always thought cavies love hay but Almond seems to feel uh, not so enthusiastic about them nowadays. Sometimes he won't eat the greens either, just carrot and pellets. He always drinks a lot of water.

2. When I spot clean his house, especially the food area because it is always a mess, he rumbles. Is he being territorial? If he's annoyed by my presence, what can I do to make him hate me less? :{

3. Almond has become really attached to his flannel toy which my sister named 'Shirley'. He drags the toy around the enclosure, puts it beside him when he's eating and drags it inside his hidey house when it's time to sleep. I think Shirley is now my Almond's wife :... I'm worried that he'd become too attached and might be depressed when Shirley is too old to be safe for a gnawing boar.

Almond is not eating much hay because he has the options of carrots. He need an unlimited supply of hay and he should be grazing on it all day long. Carrots should not be eaten everyday as they contain sugar. He needs different vegetables twice a day no more or he will not eat hay. I think he knows he can have carrots if he does not eat hay and is not eating it.

He may be saying it is his house but that is nothing to worry about. It is natural as he lives there alone. Guinea pigs always needs company. They are social animals and get lonely living alone. Almond has made friends with his toy as he has no other piggies for company. This is a good thing as he feels he has some company.

Less carrots, more hay.

Must... resist... when he's wheeking for carrots >___<

Please don't feed too many carrots; they are very high in vitamin A which builds up in the liver. You may rather use them in very small slices as little treats if you want to get Almond to do certain things or go into certain places! My own first piggies would even come running back out of a flower border they were allowed to roam into their run for a small piece of cucumber (their favourite) whenever I needed to go back into the house! :))

Up to 80% of the daily food intake should be hay for optimal bowel movement and keeping the crucial back teeth ground down nicely. Make sure that he has unlimited access. Veg should only be 1 cupful/ca. 50g per day. Make sure that you add a slice of sweet pepper, a bit of broccoli or fresh herbs like parsley, coriander/cilantro, dill, Thai basil, basil, fennel for his vitamin C intake.

Don't feed carrots for a few days, and after some initial sulking, Almond should hopefully eat more normally!

Otherwise, his behaviour is typical for a single boar and not for puberty when he will probably try to dominate you and hump his toy.

Thanks for the info about carrots. I was wondering if it had a negative effect aside from the sugars. I currently feed three sticks every day: morning, afternoon, evening. I've tried cutting it down to once a day but that's when Almond's behavior #1 began. This morning I put a lot of hay on top of his pellets bowl so he would have to eat through the hay to get to his pellets, but instead of eating it, he dragged the hay off the bowl =.= I didn't give him carrots this morning, just hay, celery leaves (no stalks), pellets and water.

About that list, I don't recognize some names because we have local terms for those. For example, what's the difference between parsley and cilantro? Locally they are both called kinchay. Celery is also locally called kinchay but I can differentiate that from parsley and cilantro >__< Herbs like basil are always sold dried.

Almond hates bell peppers. He hates them with a BURN IT WITH FIRE! passion. He also doesn't like fruits, but he takes a bite or two, maybe half a seedless grape once a week. I'll try broccoli and asparagus. Sometimes he eats kangkong (water spinach), but rarely. Can I stick to celery leaves if he doesn't like other leaves?

How about cucumber, broccoli,romaine lettuce?

Along with tomatoes, I think Almond knows cucumbers are fruits. He doesn't like them, he takes one bite and then he'll leave it alone. Maybe it's because of the fleshy part.

Broccoli and romaine lettuce, yes. He seems to like them.

Thanks so much :)

And Almond has not eaten any carrots for almost 24 hours! Despite constant wheeking.
