I have to disagree with a few points Vicky - sorry!

1) I live in Kent and we have certainly had freezing temperatures every year that I can remember.

We must be very fortunate then with the weather. It certainly hasnt been freezing and I think we would know if it was as our garden pond would be frozen.

Could be that the pond is too deep to freeze - we certainly had frozen puddles :)
Anyway, I say prepare for the worst, hope for the best and you can't go far wrong! :D

Yep next doors pond froze last year but our deeper one didnt-also it could be salt content or some other factor

That is just ridiculas. Our pond has frozen before but hasnt done for the last two years.

I'm not going to comment anymore on this at its gone past the original topic. I have passed on my views and experience. Its upto others if they want to accept it or not.

we don't have to accept your opinion, everyone has their own opinion, people are not always going to agree with you, nobody is right or wrong, that's what freedom of speech is all about. You are taking this the wrong way and getting narky about the subject. Nobody else is, we are just adding our own thoughts and experiences, please don't take this personally.

Yes I said I wasnt going to comment anymore but I am going to stand up for myself.

I'm not getting narky or taking the subject concerned the wrong way at all and I'm not saying that you have to agree with me.

I have had guinea pigs outdoors for over 17 years and have never lost one yet through cold weather. I have also had my Koi pond for over 15 years and have never lost fish in winter.

The point that I was making is that you dont have to over compensate for the extremes in temperature to safe guard your pigs in the winter months. When I had cages outside in the garden, they got extra hay and were covered by blankets etc at night but I never brought them indoors. Its only in the latter years that I have had them in a shed and an enclosed area at the side of my house and therefore I dont have to cover them anymore.

If I took anything personally it was the comments that said my guinea pigs didnt have enough room in their shed and my pond having a salt problem.

I may be a new member on here but my years of keeping animals have taught me not to over react with what they need.

Hiya,
The run you have seems fine. I have a really big run outside that has a hutch in that i keep my guinea pigs in for the summer. But in the winter i put them indoors (a shed) in hutches. But do put them outside if the weather is warm during the day. (not keeping them out in the night as they will get cold.)

Well I think its great to get a varied opinion. :D Rachey, thanks for the tips on Fireworks, my pigs love watching TV. Cuzzy loves Doctor Who 98) So will bring them in. Thankfully my neighbours don't have children and my other neighbours on the otherside are in their 60's so they don't bother either. I've just given all my fireworks to my window cleaner, gutted, but the pigs come first! :D

I think on this thread we all want to do what is best. I will use the hugger and see how we go. In Liverpool it seems colder in early mornings around 7am. You should see how much hay there is in the sleeping area, it's daft but the girls love hiding up. I'll just see how this pans out, in the meantime I'm looking for a cheap shed! :D

I would have a look here for sizes of cages: http://www.guineapigcages.com/

Their chart at the top gives you a guideline for sizes of cages for different amounts of piggies.

I have my two piggies in the minimum size for 2 pigs. I then let them outside in a biggger run during the day as long as it's not too cold or windy. In poorer weather I let them have the run of the hallway.

My piggies have no problems adjusting to the temperature changes (inside to outdoors) and despite my hubby saying they have fur, they will survive, I don't like the thought of them being outside at night when the temperature drops.

Giving them different places to explore is good for them, they won't get bored and they get exercise while discovering all these new surroundings along the way.
