Hi all well i converted my pigs to Oxbow orchard grass and have been told my order has been delayed, there is nowhere else in town that stocks it,
they now wont eat meadow hay so i went and got them oaten which they loved when i got a bag from rescue that came with Cooper, the rescues was very green and soft,
this is almost in between hay and straw its hard and brown,I'm worried about giving it to the pigs,
The only other stuff i can get atm is meadow and lucerne and i cant use lucerne as its only for babies or lactating mothers far to much calcium content,
Should i use this oaten hay?btw its the only oaten hay thats within an hour of my town

I don't think it's straw, but it does look like a very coarse hay, I'm not sure what Oaten hay is tbh, my straw for the horses is a lot yellower than that but that's because it's barley straw. I know wheat straw is darker but I think it's a lot thicker stalks than the photos.

You might find that your boys will only eat the softer greener bits, I've had some really stalky Timothy hay in the last batch I bought and they only ate the finer bits.

Hope it helps

It is def hay but just very coarse hay. we got a batch like this for the horses last year - I sent it back as they didnt really like it !

What a pain! I would be inclined to try them on it and see how it goes down but how annoying. Is there no other hay you can order online whilst waiting for your oxbox order?

Mine wont eat meadow hay either.

my girls are fussy little madams one prefers timothy one prefers meadow hay so i have ended up having two hay socks as we can't possibly eat off the floor! and if i dare try putting it back in the sock oh no we are not eating that they say! But i love them anyway.

I would say it is hay, i would be tempted to chop it shorter if it is really rough

hope the oxbow comes soon!

That is definitely straw, because I use it for my Shetland Pony x

ok - i cheated - looks like straw to me because of the colour

i did a google search under straw and ran through wikapedia pics

then the same for hay

i have so much grass i maght start making my own hay

thanks all,

Well basically in my town we have little oaten, lucerne and meadow hay available,
Anything good online takes a minimum of 10 days usually longer to get here so i might as well wait for the oxbow, they are having the last of there oxbow now and I'm a little worried about the oaten,i may cut it into smaller pieces i think xxxxxxxx

that looks like straw to me hun :\ Although i wouldnt be inclined to make a clear verdict because i keep my horse on shavings :\

You can feed the lucerne for a short period, I don't think a few days is going to be a problem. Just lay off all high calcium veggies to balance it out a little.
Mix lucerne with the oaten hay, or some meadow hay, if you're unsure.

Unfortunately the boys will have to make do!

thanks everyone,
well i chopped it into 5cm pieces as i was worried about them getting an eye injury from it,they did eat it and even popcorned so maybe its not that bad,

We are off to get the meadow hay tomorrow and as much as i would never force my boys into anything they will just have to eat it as there isnt a choice xxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The hay in the pics is too course for GP`s to eat and they can catch their eyes on the hard edges.

I wouldn`t use it in any circumstances.

Anders, xx>>>
