anyone from sweden able to confirm this ?
Interesting Fact: If a buyer in Sweden does not already have guinea pigs, it is illegal to sell just one guinea pig.
 
Apparently so, it is the same for budgies there too!

I think it is also the same in Switzerland.

How do you prove you already have one guinea pig if that is the case though?
 
I think the fact the law is in place will discourage people from buying just one.

It's much better than saying 'Guinea Pig's are social animals. When arguing your case you can state it is illegal to keep a single Guinea Pig. I imagine that will have a better impact and me being a law abiding citizen I'd have to have 2 :))!
 
I guess they may have compulsory home checks.

Isn't it the case that you need a permit to have a dog in Oz? There must be checks done for that so why not for Guinea pigs too?
 
I'm sure there used to be dog licence in the UK was just thinking though that if it is true why not petition to make it law here ....
 
why not? you'd have to put solid arguments forward as to why it's necessary and show how it works elsewhere and how it improves the animal's welfare (both not being alone AND the law).

Isn't it that every social animal in Sweden must have company? :) Like if it's a dog, you can take it to dog parks or something for company, though obviously having two dogs is better :)

I wonder how it works for cats, they can like company often but are naturally solitary . . . I think they're happier if they have friends though :) except for my old cranky cat :))
