Hi,
One of my piggies was diagnosed with a respiratory infection today & is on antibiotics. She normally lives indoors with 6 other pigs but the vet has recommended she be separated from the group until she finishes her antibiotics (1 week). She's not at all happy on her own & only perks up & starts eating when she hears the other pigs squeaking in the other room. Can anyone advise me whether it would be OK to put her back in the same room as the others (still in a separate cage) or whether it would be better to carry on with her in a different room. I don't want to make the others ill as well but she seems really down on her own. Has anyone had a similar experience? Thanks v much. x

I think the thread on rattling pig very chesty (or similar) may help you.

I would have thought keeping her away from her cagemates would be more stressful and upsetting for her. Someone with more experience will point you in the right direction. Hope your piggie is feeling better soon :)

Thanks so much both for your replies. I thought it might be more stressful for her to suddenly be on her own, maybe I'll leave her on her own tonight & if she's no worse tomorrow I'll move her cage back into the same room as the others. Hopefully she'll get better soon, I lost another pig 3 weeks ago from the same thing. :( Fingers x'd I've caught this one in time.

I personally would put her back with her cage-mates as she sounds like she's pining for them; this could hamper her recovery & she may become depressed.
I've had a piggy with a URI, kept with her cage-mate & the cage-mate didn't catch it.
I hope she's better soon :)

i have done both and the seperated piggy stoped eating completely so now i always make sure they have at least one friend close by or with them. i hope your piggy feels better soon it is so stressful when they are ill

Thanks to everyone for their advice. I put Phoebe back in the with the group & she was SO much happier. She's nearly finished her antibiotics now & apart from a wierd snorting sort of noise (?!) she seems to be back to her usual happy self. Phew! :)
