Hello

we had the 2 new rescue girls out having floor and first cuddle times a few moments ago . . . and noticed they are riddled with Lice, i called the vets and have an appointment for tomorrow 5.40 they are going to treat them with xeon? and also going to give the girls a good check over with there weight and runny eyes and scabby ear.

Am i right in thinking i will need to treat Bubble and Squeak as well they dont live in same cage but cages are next to each other and they share the same run at different times.

Can dogs get guinea pig lice? and will us and the kids be OK or will we need to be treated?, will i need to treat my carpets with anything?

I will be giving the cages and extra thorough clean out and disinfect.

I cant stop itching at the thought of it all. YUKKKKKY!

Itchy regards
Kelly xx

Hey there! Treating guinea pig lice is very easy, From the information i have read, The only thing humans and other pets can catch from piggies is ringworm. My boys had ringworm when i first got them and i treated it easily, my dog nor any of the family caught them. However, given how easy it is to buy anti lice treatments from pet stores i would advise you to treat all your piggies so you dont end up in a nasty lice cycle! :P

Ofcourse the vet will give more advice. :)

Hope ive been helpfull and if anyone thinks I'm wrong please say! :D

Thanks very much for all your replies, i will deffo look at the shampoo, i will ask vet tomorrow how soon after the xeon they can be bathed, does anyone know if its a pippet on back of neck thing like dogs or injection?

Thanks again

xeon is usually a pipette like dog and cat anti flea treatment. obvious specially designed for smaller animals :)

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure you can get rid of lice very easily without the need for the drug Ivermectin (Ivermectin is the active ingredient in the Xeno product you mentioned). Maybe the Vet wants to treat with Xeno in case they also have mites? (mites DOES require Ivermectin)

Anyway, either way you will need to shampoo the piggies to get rid of the debris. If they've had Xeno applied then make sure you leave it a couple of days before bathing them though. After shampooing it's a good idea to comb the wet hair through with a nit comb and I find that using a gentle conditioner helps the comb go through the hair easier, especially with long-haired pigs.

Good luck!

Just wanted to add, it's definitely a good idea to get the Vet to see them as they might also need treatment for their runny eyes and scabby ear. I know lice can be very alarming to see (I was completely freaked the first time I saw them!) but the eye and ear problems could be more serious than the pesky lice, so please make sure they get a thorough check over x

this is someething which I'm not sure of but I have experienced myself itching on my skin after cuddling an itchy piggy in the past :{

if the lice/mites or whatever a piggy may have.......why would the human have itchy skin after cuddling the itchy piggy??

I'm just putting the question out there :p-c:))

:)

Like most lice/fleas they WILL bite human skin if its right there, however they cannot survive on us so we will never be "infested" so as soon as the pigs are clear of them theyre should be no more itching for you. :)
