I took my Guinea to the vet yesterday after a week of watching my male chewing his hind legs a lot this week. He bites at his inner thigh area, clearly he is uncomfortable. I bathed him but that did not help. The vet did not see anything but gave us Selamectin ( liquid placed between his shoulder blades every three weeks for 3 treatments) to treat for mites and an over the counter jock itch cream in case it is a fungus.
The vet said his scrotum looked 'dry' and I am to put the fungal cream on that area as well as where I see him biting/itching.
We never got a 100% on diagnosis so we are doing both treatments and hoping for the best. Vet also recommended I get a mild guinea pig shampoo and was his rear legs, butt area every few days to keep it clean from his saliva and the fungus cream. If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I am open to trying new things and learing. And yes looking for a mild/all natural shampoo.
Thank you!

Hi, I see this post was Tuesday but there is no date. I assume it is this past Tuesday.

Plus I notice like you said, dry, I also notice 'white flakes' in his fur.

If I get any new info I will pass along too.
It would be better to start your own thread about yourself piggy. I don’t know about washing the piggy every few days. They keep themselves clean and should only really need washing if their bum is really dirty. Washing too often can also strip their skin of the essential oils.

Hi!

I don't quite understand your post, but would agree with what your vet has prescribed as they are addressing all possible angles.

Please always wait 48 hours after applying the selamectin as it takes as long to be fully absorbed by the skin before you do any other skin treatments or medicated baths, or it's effect will be noticeably weakened. The same goes for any other topical treatment (i.e. anything applied directly on the problem area, like any spot-on parasite treatment containing ivermectin or selamectin in vet strength concentration; any shampoos, dips or creams).

Please be aware that in order to get on top of any mange mites, the selamectin spot-on needs to be done three times at the product specific interval; usually about 2 weeks for vet grade products.
