Hello, we added 2 piggies to our family today, they are beautiful however one of them has a skin issue

The girl we got them from. Thought it may have something to do with them having a breif stint outside when previously kept indoors

We will be going to vet sometime between Friday and Monday but until then is there anything I can do to soothe his skin so it's not so itchy?

Other piggie doesn't look to have any skin issues

Can upload a picture if it will help also please note I'm not trying to bash the girl we got them from as she clearly loves her pets and all are well looked after the only animal with issue is this poor little guy just want to see if there is anything I can do to help him out until we get to the vet

Many thanks

Hi and welcome!

The itchiness can have several causes (skin parasites, namely mange mites which are invisible to the naked eye, or fungal, which will all require different products), so - as uncomfortable as it is - please don't be tempted to home treat on spec with low dosed shop products. It can mean that your vet will struggle to diagnose and won't be able to come in with the appropriate, high dosed treatment straight away.

If you can, please have them seen sooner. It is very likely that you have to treat both girls, the second as a preventative measure. Please take them both; it is less stressful for them anyway.

Just the stress of being in new surroundings can lower the immune system and trigger an attack of what is around or already sitting in the skin.

We have members from all over the world and find it very helpful if you please added your country, state or (for the UK) your county, so we can always tailor any advice and recommendations to what is available and possible where you are. I'm from the UK, I didn't mean actual treatments just something to soothe at the moment. It is quite clear that the vet will have to give him something as there is hair loss/ thinning they are both boys and as yet unnamed

I just feel so bad for him he has done nothing but scratch and bite himself since I got him home which admittedly was only half an hour ago so I was thinking more along the lines of baby creams I'm just not sure if those are safe for these little guys

No, please don't! Could you see whether you can get to your vet or a reasonably priced out-of-hours vet? It rather sounds like mange mites and in that case, what he needs is a good ivermectin product, not the shop stuff, as it is the eggs that burrowed in the skin that ar causing the discomfort. A bath can make things worse rather than better and at the worst cause fitting.

It's not the price of the vet it's the work hours would try to have my room mate take them it's just always better to go hear what's going on first hand

Will let you all know what's going on then

Many thanks

Best of luck! There is usually a reasonably priced out-of-hours vet service in most conurbations available during the evening and early morning hours unless you need to use them overnight. You can find out from your regular vets.

Well piggies went to vet on Friday and it was mites. So they have they're treatment now and we will do it every 2 weeks for next month

That sounds about right! What product were your prescribed? the itching should be going down noticeably now.

Thanks for the update and all the best!

Xeno 50 for the one with the worst of it and noticeable hair loss and Xeno 450 for the bigger one

Those are good products! Xeno 50 is for guinea pigs below 800g and xeno 450 for those above.

For the little guy we have to use 3 tubes hopefully he will sit better when we have to put it on. When the vet did it he was one unhappy piggie

Many thanks
