Hi there, I'm a little concerned about my piggies tonight, we couldn't get our usual hay supply on monday so I bought timothy hay to do until we got more of the usual one, however, this morning I noticed that all my piggies were itching, biting & scratching alot. In both cages. They never behave like this, so I immediately thought its the hay, we got more of usual stuff luckily, so we cleaned the cages all out completely, bathed all the piggies, washed all the bedding in 60 degree wash, and I got the johnstones insecticidal spray for small animals, they seem to be a little more settled, except 1, she seems to still be biting & scratching too much for my liking, more than the others, do I need to be worried, or do/dont do anything else at moment. Theres no broken skin, no redness, she just still appears to be quite irritated. Would it have been the hay or something else ? All advice appreciated. Thanks.

Hi!

Please do not Johnstone's insectidal spray - a waste of money! It is not effective against hay mites, which are the likeliest cause of the itching.
You can find more information on it in this link here. Please be aware that the hair loss is secondary from scratching and barbering and not instant.
See a vet as soon as the itching returns. Please do not home treat; right now all you have done is wiped the crime scene, but not sutainably. If hay mites are confirmed you can try to reclaim any vet cost from the pet shop together with an official diagnosis as long as you still have your hay receipt. ;)

What to check and look out for in new guinea pigs (vet checks, sexing, parasites&illness)
