Hi all,

I wonder if anyone can help. My 2 guinea pigs were a bit itchy when I brought them home from the rescue centre, so I took them to the vets and got some ivermectin. I was told to put a tube on each of them once a fortnight. So two tubes down I thought I they would be feeling better, as I've only one tube left. Wesleys fur is still full of dandruff and I found a really scabby bit round his rump. He also runs around his large c&c cage occasionally and I am now wondering whether he's doing it because he's itchy rather than just having fun. He's not losing fur. I'll give them the last tube on Monday but is this normal that it takes so long as the vet said we would see results after two tubes. I'll take them back to the vets but I wondered if anyone else had had this experience.

The running is popcorning or zooming and a expression of joy of life.

Generally, mites should go quiet after two rounds. Please still finish the course (the third round is to catch any emergening eggs and prevent a return). Have them checked by your vet again re. fungal. It can be just dry skin, especially if your piggies have come from hutches into a fully heated room, but you want to eliminate all the obvious causes first.

Can you please confirm with the rescue centre whether they have been treated for mites/fungal while in rescue?

PS: With members from all over the world, we find it very helpful of you added your country, state or (for the UK) your county/city to your details, so we can always give you the best advice for your part of the world straight away. Thank you! It's so great to just get a bit of reassurance when I'm new to keeping piggies. They've certainly not lost their appetite and they seem to be happy with their new home as they're popcorning all the time and then fall asleep in a cuddle sack. Will fill in some of my details.

When contacting the rescue, please also ask them what products they use for any treatment.

PS: You can find lots more information for new owners at the top of our various Care sections.

Aw, they sound full of life! Hope the cause of their itching goes soon. Keep up the good work.
