I noticed some tiny brown flecks on my girls' hair a few weeks ago, much like finely ground coffee, and looked into this. They've been scratching like crazy so I did a deep clean of the cage, binned or washed old toys etc, bathed, cut hair and put spot on on both piggies. To no avail it seems, as both are still scratching away. Anyone have any idea a) what it is exactly and b) how to get rid for good? (Ps anything likely to linger on humans or human clothes?)

Please have your girls seen by a vet for a proper diagnosis and treatment. From your description, it is likely either lice or fur/hay mites. Please do not treat on spec with low dosed shop products, as you can easily make the problem worse rather than better.
Please always see a vet promptly, as any skin parasites are much easier to treat with the appropriate high dosed product and your guinea pigs are a lot less impacted. As this has obviously gone a stage up by now, I would not treat with on your own but get a proper diagnosis.

We can't tell you exactly what it is but does sound like it could be static lice which spot on will not treat as they are not blood sucking. The best product that most will recommend and use is Gorgeous Guineas Lice and easy available from www.gorgeousguineas.com
What spot on did you use ? Most shop bought products are under dosed there for do not work for mites. The best you can get is Xeno 450.
You will need to thoroughly clean all your cage etc for putting your freshly bathed guineas back in.
