can anyone tell me whether itrafungol will treat other fungal infections in piggies that aren't ringworm?

Blossom still isn't quite right since her last get visit and I'm taking her back today. As mites have been ruled out by the vet doing a scrape test and the baytril prescribed for a bacterial infection doesn't appear to have totally cured the problem, I'm thinking about asking for a prescription for fungal (which is what I suspected in the first place) but I'm sure it isn't ringworm and so don't want to ask for something that won't do any good.

I have been prescribed it for my pigs in the past when the whole herd had fungal that wasn't Ringworm. It treats most types if I remember correctly. Some Candida types can also respond well to Nystatin.

Hmm vets not sure. I agree with them it doesn't look anything like ringworm. They said it's not usual for Guinea pigs to get other types of fungal. To be fair, there's very little to go on.

Nibbles (who has come down with whatever it is more recently) is scratching a lot but Blossom seems to have stopped scratching.

There's possibly a tiny bit of white around Blossom's ears but it's not obvious.

Blossoms has got a band of shorter and thinner than normal hair round her middle. Nibbles hasn't got that.

Vet has gone for a steroid injection (dexadreson) for Nibbles to try and ease the itching and prescribed 2 weeks of baytril for her and 1 week for Blossom.

We have booked to take them back next week to check on progress.

Nibbles really doesn't like the vets. I would have been really concerned if I hadn't seen it before when we've taken her. She just deflates it's so odd! After a while she got braver and went and hid under the scales.

I am a bit surprised the vet said that really as there are many types. I used to volunteer with someone who had done loads of research on fungal though so was exposed to it a lot and saw it both at clinic and in my own pigs. You could always try Imaverol and see if it has any effect?

Yes I was too based on what I've read on here in the past but I don't have any personal experience/relevant qualifications myself. She said she would do some more research before we bring them back next week and was open to anything I could produce to show her, which is good.

Let me know if you need any information to pass on, I can have a think about what mine have had over the years.

Thanks Helen. Yes please that would be great. I can't be certain of course that it is fungal but any research/commentary on fungal other than ringworm would be great. She was familiar with the meds you'd mentioned because I mentioned them to her when I got there.
