It's a shame for boars...

I was looking through some online classifieds last night to find a second hand hutch, and I kept seeing guinea pigs - especially single boars - being 'got rid of'. :'( There was one, a year old, described as timid but healthy - the owner 'doesn't have the time for him'. I might have to adopt him... neuter him and find him a friend... :)

Also, does anyone know of a really good guinea pig book - with advice on nutrition, behaviour, introductions etc?

Thank you!

Sorry, just read the earlier posting about the Piglopedia etc. Ignore my question!

I also get pairs of boars brought in that have started fighting and the Humans don't have room for two cages and don't want to castrate them, the last pair like that had room for one cage and would have got one castrated but couldn't choose one over the other :(

The 'unwanted' boar situation is one of the reasons why we prefer to adopt boys. Part of me would love a large free range run with half a dozen sows running togther, but I just love my boys :smitten: They're so affectionate, friendly, chunky and funny and I love the constant rumbling and chattiness!

The Peter Gurney books are quite interesting :)

That sounds wonderful Ron, boars are fab if only they all got on! Sunshine and Twinkle are happy seperated, they still popcorn and are very much people pigs. Pudsey is rumbling a lot at Eccles, I just hope I don't have to seperate them in the future. But I do worry about the quality of life for Eccles, he doesn't wheek much and seems frightened. Hope he comes around! :-\

This is the reason I ended up with 4 boys. My original 2 stopped getting along. I must admit I do think there's something special about bonded boys and I wouldn't swap them for girls even if it would mean less space given to cages and no cleaning out stinky boar bums xx0

Ron I think free ranging boars getting on wonderfully is a great dream ......... I take it you mean over about 10 acres ;D ;D ;D

Is the constant rumbling normal? I was getting worried about my boys, They are setling down a bit found them both chilled out today next thing they were at it again.

Yeah Tracey, it's just showing who is the boss. I've a rumbler. I'm really not sure if Eccles rumbles back as he hides up a lot,I hope he does and doesn't take no messing from The Pudster! :D

Thanks I think they will be fine then, I thought Mr Rumbler (fudge) was getting stressed but as the other one isn't really bothered I guess it's normal. I have heard him rumble back but he gets bored and goes off to do something else while Fudge carries on.

Yep, Blaze and Scampy rumbled all the time and Pepe does at Leo, just to make sure Leo knows who's the boss. They usually popcorn off after a good rumble ::)
