Well we took the plunge on Saturday, we took down the run outside the cage so the piggies had the run of the living room.

Star came out had a look round, sort of nodded and went back in the cage (its been 3 months since the run was put up for the babies).

Twinkle and Midnight however, oh boy, there was popcorns, sprinting and a whole new world to explore.

They havent found the kitchen yet but have found the hall and bathroom (which is downstairs). had a yell from Katy who was in shower to find midnight sitting and watching.

Twinkle has discovered that MIL's bed in living room makes a great big hidey and also a great place to play hide and seek. She seems to like sitting just peeking out.

So the run of about 8 sq feet has expanded to over 100 sq feet.

How do you manage their piggie poo's and wee's? I'm carpeted and I just cant stand the thought of wee everywhere, they only get let out on my kitchen lino! BAd slave!

We have always toilet trained them, the same way you would a kitten or puppy.

As long as they know they can get back in the cage they should be okay. Our floor is laminate with an old second hand "large" rug/carpet on top. We arent too concerned although we have got a fleece on the floor outside the cage.

To be honest we get more spills from my 85 year old MIL than accidents from piggies.

Thats amazing- how did you toilet train? Did it take long? Id love to let mine roam.

If your piggies are used to going to the loo inside the cage, you have to take a chance. Best way (the way we did it with the babies Midnight and Twinkle who are now 4 mths old) is to get a foldout run and place next to cage with fleece down to catch accidents.

Have something soft for them to use to get out of cage, we use an old cushion.

Then let them get used to coming in and out of cage. They get used to doing wee's in the cage. After a few weeks (in our case 3 mths lol) remove the run.

You get used to the odd poo being dropped, easily removed, but in our 3 1/2 years of doing this with piggies, we find that 99% of wee's are done in the cage.

Oh woweee, free ranging piggies! Oh and that's amazing that you have managed to toilet train them! I let Dottie free range every now and again as she loves it so much and she always holds herself, when she needs to go she'll stand by her cage for me to lift her in :)

What you can do is find a cushion that you dont mind sacrificing, add some ties and then once cage is open tie or use some other method to fix cushion to cage opening to allow soft footing.

We also use a rock just inside the opening to allow a leg up and also doubles as something for them to wear down their front claws.

Guinea Pigs<3 sounds like your piggy is already house trained as she knows when she needs to go. Just needs a way to get in the cage without you.

so glad you took the plunge and let them have a roam, my boys get the run of the bungalow when I'm at home too :)) i always find poo lurking but generally they go back to their house to wee. Dudley never wees outside the cage but as Yuri is the newcomer he hasnt quite realised its not appropriate to wee in the corners of of our rooms, i just made sure theres no dark spaces for them to squat in @)
Hope to see some pics of them exploring

wow - thats fantastic. Would be brilliant to have them indoors and running free
