I read about them. You have to be careful they give even coverage so that the window glass temperature is consistent otherwise parts of the window can contract and parts expand unevenly and this puts stress on the glass and could warp it.

🤣for me, i don't really care. It's just a couple days with a home sauna, but don't want my little fur potatoes to get fried. Never was this hot here as the forecasted temps 🤯🥵

We have the films on all the windows that I am not covering with sheets. It takes about 1-2 C off the room temperature compared to before. You can't do it on large windows.

We have just had a little rain, so no chance of opening windows and doors once the air has cooled a little bit, so our first tropical night basically starts here... and then right up to mid-thirties tomorrow. It's 24 C in the piggy lounge... :(

We had that rain too, but it was only a sprinkle really. I left the windows and doors open. My weather app says the may be showers in the next hour, but I'm leaving the upstairs windows and door open anyway, I'd rather let in any cool air and risk a bit of rain. (Talk of the devil, it has just started raining!)
 
Sitting here at the start of dawn, listening to the crows and magpies having another major spat in the big tree, I am guarding the house with all holes open that can be opened in the faint hope that enough water has drained off in the last few hours so I can avoid the worst of the humidity from the evening rain but catch any faint air movement while it is still cool enough to get indoors temperatures down as much as possible.

Sleep for the rest of the week is going to be fairly optional anyway, although I now have an inflatable mattress for sleeping in the lounge or on the kitchen floor when my bedroom becomes unusable and I don't have to improvise a mattress from piggy towels and fleeces...

I also hope that the big tree at the bottom of our garden can break the hot breeze coming from that direction a bit for us. At this time of year, the sun is unfortunately too high that it can provide a couple of hours of extra vital shade in the morning for the house; hence why I am sitting here at the crack of dawn.

No cooking for the rest of the week (the eggs for today's and tomorrow's salad dinner have already been boiled) and no big salad buffets; I am sticking with batch prepared, easy to put together one salad meals that satisfy hub's hunger and prevent me from losing any more weight but that don't take any effort whatsoever.

All piggy cages are cleaned and their stuff is washed. Whatever energy I can find between hanging around like a dead fly (as we say in German) is going towards keeping the house and the pigs as cool as possible and my pot plants alive to what promises to become another record breaker heat over the next 3-4 days. But as I don't do high humidity and hot weather, I am going into survival mode and just hope that all pigs are going to make it, including my frailer ones. Even my youngest ones are now coming up to 4 years.

At least, this time round I am not having Covid badly on top of everything, like the last time in 2022. And I can move around again, compared to last year with my broken hip.
One has to be grateful for the little things in life...

It could always be worse, and if it is worst, then it has to get better again eventually...

That's why I generally love big thunderstorms - they clean the air and bring some welcome relief, however shortly. What we had here last night was not a lot - just enough to really ramp up humidity without bringing any relief.

At least, not being able to sleep during the coolest hours has allowed me to get the lounge down to a more comfortable 21 C (down from 24 C) so that is only so much indoors temperatures can climb today with several tropical nights in the offing here as well - but it means that at least the battle is won for one more day. :)
 
Up early too….. here we go….. although actually I feel quite exhausted already.

Almost ready- I have got the fan going at the back door & I am sat on the middle of the house, as the front door is open too.
Still not converted anyone else on our street, just me with our windows covered.(every single one I can safely reach today.)

Thank you for the steering wheel tip yesterday, Wiebke, despite the sheet over the car the towel definitely helped. My boss & co worker were amused, but it meant I had a cooler car to start the drive home, which gave the failing aircon a helping hand.

Yes, the thunderstorm woke me up. It was lovely but it doesn't seem to have made a lot of difference. I've got all the windows open and the temperature in my flat has gone down slightly but once it gets hot here it holds on to the heat. I'm dreading the next few days.

Yes, we are working the fan overtime. Something nice is cold water in a foot basin. Not icy, but just cool. I hope things are OK for you over the heat wave ❤️🙏

My brother was saying yesterday that heatwaves make you feel like you're readying your house for the apocalypse.

I haven't dared put the AC on too low. If it can maintain a constant 25° in the living room where the piggies are, I'll be happy. Any lower and we feel sick when we go in other rooms.

It makes a real difference when you can keep the sun getting directly onto surfaces.

I am feeling exhausted, too, but apart from keeping the sheets watered (which takes surprisingly little water) all my morning jobs are done, including a quick walk up the road trying not to use my stick but also not to overuse my iffy hip muscles. I've been going for 5 hours already so I am resting covered in righteous virtue and in a noticeably more humid but at least also noticeably cooler house.

The piggies will adapt to higher temperatures when it happens gradually. The worst are the big heat spikes and temperature jumps. But I have put the cooler elements from the cool bag in the freezer for this afternoon and evening, and the water jug for the piggies in the fridge. I will bring the fan from my bedroom into the piggy lounge if it gets unpleasant.

At the moment we are having some cloud cover, which I fervently hope is going to keep temperatures a degree or two lower than predicted.
 
They were saying on the news this morning that the temperatures will break the record set in the heatwave of 1976.
I remember that one with standpipes for water and a nightmare for those sitting exams.

At least today we have better ways of keeping cool and hydrated.

I went to check on the piggies and discovered my husband had put the aircon in their room on for a bit. They also have an icepod in the cage which is being ignored

Look after yourselves as well as the piggies

Same here, 29.5 indoors. The fan is on and the piggies are lying with their backs against the fleece covered ice pods. It's just waiting and waiting. It's like civilization has become trapped in amber 🙁
 
I had to suffer for the pigs today, I have all three of my fans on their cages which I ended up lying next to their cage like a baked cat because I didn't have a spare, ice packs covered in fleece, cooling mats, sprayed them with cooling mist every hour... I had the windows closed and the blinds down all day. Thankfully they all seem okay but I still feel bad for them and I'm off work this week to cater to their every need. It's rough here in a top floor flat! :(

Probably should have stipulated the fans aren't directly on their cages, poor word choice incase that's why the crying reacts 🤣 I've triangulated them around the room to cool the whole room down. It's still hot at balls but not as hot as outside I'd imagine (I'm not going out in thaaaaat)
