Well took Jerry back to the vets this morning and he is being kept in. Slight shock but at least they will be able to bulk him up on CC and meds (zantac & metoclopramide was mentioned) until he is at a suitable weight to investigate whats actually going on. The normal examination the vet said that everything from the outside seemed fine although his gut was pretty empty :(
He still has his personality being a cheeky wee chap when the vet was looking at him and also his strength.

So please send good vibes that my wee boy comes home if not healthy then knowing what is actually going on with him! Don't like a quiet house :(

THANKS GUYS

I will keep my fingers and guinea's paws crossed for you. Have been wondering how your guineapig is, first thing I did was look when I got in just now.

Was thinking of your boy on the bus this morning, I know it's hard but try not to worry, he is in the best place. Hoping they can give you some answers. Keep us updated please.
Lots of love and healing vibes to Jerry *hugs* x

Sending lots of well wishes and healing vibes your way. Come on little Jerry, you can do it! Fingers and paws firmly crossed x

Keeping everything crossed for you that he comes through this.

All the best

Oh bless him, he will miss you too! He is in the best place where they can watch him I guess. All fingers and paws crossed here. Thinking of you x

For Jerry x

Means so much you guys are thinking about us. I have just phoned the vets. He is pretty much the same as he went in this morning. He hasn't eaten much off his own back and they have started to syringe feed. His weight is 920g (he hasn't lost that much. Monday he was 945g). He is also on Baytril, Zantac and another gut stimulate that starts with an E (sorry tried to remember but its gone out my head). So tonight will be a case of keeping up with the syringe feed and meds until tomorrow. Potentially an Xray tomorrow all going well. So I have to phone back again about 10am tomorrow. So hopefully he has a good night and doesn't miss us too much. Lets see what tomorrow brings, I am feeling positive! :)

Thanks xx

Not much change through the night :( X-ray being carried out soon. Ive to phone the vets around 2pm for an update! I hope they find something :(

Come on Jerry x

Fingers firmly crossed, I'm keeping a close eye on this thread I really hope they find the problem soon! X

Finger crossed for you and your poorly boy! I hope that the vets can find out what is wrong.

Oh poor Jerry, come on lad! I've just logged in at work to check for an update from you. Poor little boy. I hope they find a cause too and can make him better. Do they say that they are managing to syringe feed him to make sure he's eating? I'll pop back here later in the hope that there is some positive news for you. In the meantime, I'm crossing everything I can think of for you xx

Thanks guys. Yeah they are continuing to syringe feed him and apparent he did eat something through night off his own back but very small amount. Still not producing very many poops though :(

An hour until I phone. I'm clock watching but keeping self busy at work trying not to think the worst!

xx

Bless, at least it's something though, he hasn't stopped eating completely which is good.

Urgh, hate sales calls, hard not to be rude to them sometimes!

Oh please try not to think the worst, it's so hard I know. Not much longer and hopefully a positive update x

Update:

Weight- yesterday 920g today 885g :(
Food- syringe feed 3x daily min 5mls each time. He is also still nibbling at his museli.
Fuild- apparetly he has started to drink from the bowl. This is an improvement.
Meds- Zantac, Batryl, metacam and emtrid (not how its spelt but it's for his guts)

So the up shot of it all is that he is staying in over the weekend :( No x-ray was carried out today. Vet wants a urine sample first. Then take it from there. So I'm glad he hasn't deteriorated but I was hoping for more of an improvement.

Thanks xx

Poor baby. The weightloss is a concern I guess, but at least they are getting food into him and he is eating a little bit by himself. It sounds like he's getting everything he needs at the vet. He may be a little disorientated being somewhere strange but getting expert care which is the main thing. Are you near enough to go and see him? It is soul destroying not to hear better news, but it's not bad news either so keep your chin up for him. It did take ages for my little guy to start picking up after his first bad episode of bloat, so hopefully he'll mend slowly but surely x

I did wonder whether I was able to visit him and maybe take his fleece for a comfort smell. He does have a towel with him but he loves his fleece and I kno he will be missing his cuddles massively. I'll phone them later and ask if I could maybe do that tomorrow morning, since I am not allowed to phone on Sunday :(

I'm not convinced its bloat or does it really knock them off their paws like this?! I do take some comfort in that he is still he cheeky wee self and bouncing about. Oh well a long weekend ahead......

Thanks xx

Hi Jebebr.

i have often syringe fed my Dotty, her weight goes up and down and at one point she was down to 795g.

The rule of thumb apparently is that a piggy that weighs roughly 1kg needs around 120mls of food over a 24 hr period if they are not really eating by themselves.

At the moment I am just topping dotty up and I give her 25mls of Critical Care formula for herbivores in the morning and about the same in the evening. However, when she has been poorly and hasnt eaten by herself at all I give her 120 mls over the day and apportion it into about 6 feeds. It is quite time consuming but really worth it.

Debbie from Excellent Adventure is a real expert at syringe feeding so it might be worth dropping her a line.

I use 1ml syringes and cut the end off so that it is easy to pull up the mixture.

I am wondering if the vets are syringing enough into your piggy. 3 x 5mls a day is not enough if he is not eating much.

Hope that you find this useful

I think the wee man would love to see you and enjoy a nice cuddle and maybe you could try and feed him for a bit.

Agree that the amount they're trying to feed him isn't really enough so perhaps you could mention that. I keep Critical Care at home on standby or use mushed up pellets (soaked in hot water, cooled and mashed).

Bloat (if it is that) can kill if not treated and really knocked my boy when he fell ill with it. Don't despair though as hopefully Jerry will pull through with the care he is getting. You were quick to spot something wrong and get him to the vet.

Definitely go see him tomorrow! x

Thank you. We have to phone at 9.30 to see if we can see him. We already have his fleece looked out we'll also take some nuggets and some lettuce and coriander from the garden that he loves. We will ask about his weigh tomorrow also and if its dropped again will ask about the syringe feed.
Thank you xx

I hope they are allowing you to see him today. I'm sure a cuddle and his favourite fleece will really perk him up.

It must be so awful to be away from him. When my boys have been in the vets for just a day I have been pacing around the house waiting to pick them up.

Healing vibes x

Its not a nice feeling. My husband and I are looking at his cage and catch ourselves speaking to an empty cage because its a habbit now!

Today is D Day, hope at some point after 2pm we shall have some answers.

We did see him on Saturday, looking much the same as when we took him in. Feed him some of the veg we too with us but seemed to be eating it awkwardly and it was nosier than normal! So maybe it is his teeth but we shall find out.

So thanks again, fingers crossed we can get him home later today or tomorrow xx
