I've found a lump *she's gone*

I lifted Mabel for a cuddle and play and under her arm, there's a lump. It's hard and you can't move it about. I've booked her into the vet Friday 10am (earliest they could take her) for them to have a look. Any ideas.:(

i've none, but wanted to bump thread up. could it be muscle i wonder?

can you roll it around in between yor two fingers or is it attached?

Attatched, no you can't. She is free ranging right now and is getting about fine and popcorning as usual?

Under her front, right, leg. It's about the size of a grape? I don't know how else to put it really. I've never had anything like this, and I'm stumped.

Have you checked for lumps in the same position on the other legs?

Yep and there's nothing. I check my piggies all over every night and in the morning a quick look at them (but they're too hungry to start lifting up:))) and I would know if anything else was going on... possibly it is a gland I had a mouse with a swollen sweat gland, could it be that or is that not possible in piggers?

x

It could be an enlarged lymph node. It is possible that it became enlarged because of a localised infection. It would be an unusual position for a sebaceous cyst. A fibroma could also fit the description.

Mabel just died in my arms.... she was only 17 months old..... what on earth caused this?

Goodbye my baby 8...

Not expected from a lump as such. Could be just a straightforward coincidence. Possibly heart attack.
Either way, it is an unexpected and sad ending.

I have a feeling it may have been related to cancer. She may have had cancer somewhere else, and developed lymphoma as a secondary cancer, but whatever has caused it, deaths that are sudden and unexpected are not preventable. You did nothing wrong and I am sure she knew she was loved. I'm really sorry for your loss *hugs*

Guinea pigs are resistant to malignancy and a lymphoma would be extremely rare. Very few cases have been reported in the literature.
I have posted that to reassure anyone who may have found a lump on their pig tonight and is now worried that it may be "something nasty".
"Common things happen most commonly".

Heart disorders are far more common than cancers. Lumps are most usually benign and harmless. Not to say cancer was not the case, without a post-mortem immediately after death it cannot be known, but I suspect symptoms other than the lump would have been in play by the time the pig got to the point of death as a direct result of a cancer.

I'm very sorry to hear you lost Mabel. I am glad that she was surrounded with love at the end, in your arms. Poor little girl, and sympathy to you as well.

how would you know that?
i think it's important to remain open minded for want of a better phrase, and unless you have a lot of medical experience which means you can make a definate diagnosis over the internet, it's probably better not to say things like this.
not to try and be nasty, but when i got florence she had a fatty lump on her tummy. beks did tell me about it and it's totally harmless. saying things you "think it was cancerous" like this could easily send people into worry about their own pigs when most likely there's no cause for concern. i know if i hadn't been warned about flo's lump i would have been very worried.
either way i'm very sorry for your loss, kt. it must have been a terrible shock, but well done for noticing and trying to help her. hope you're ok x

I was merely stating my opinion. How can anyone possibly give a 100% accurate diagnosis over the internet? Others have been much more forceful in their 'advice' to members on this forum so I don't think I was speaking out of sorts. The message posted above mine has actually really offended me - I have never once told anyone that I knew anything more about guinea pigs than the next person! :( Rather than starting a debate about whether I'm right or not (and I never once said I was) can we keep this thread as a place to offer our thoughts to the owner who has just lost their guinea pig please?

If you post an opinion you must expect to be questioned about it or else justify what you have said. I was wondering what reaction I would have got if I had said the death could be related to an ingrowing toe-nail!??
The attempt to "get the thread back on track" would indicate you cannot justify your comments.
Please prove me wrong.

Can you guys please STOP!
The OP's guinea pig has passed away and all you can do is debate once again, this seems to have happened in more than one health and illness thread,
if the piggy passes it is our job to support the OP,not fill the thread with this nonsense, there is no benefit to doing all of this now as it will not bring back the piggy, instead of upsetting the OP how about you pm eachother if you have an issue.

Bonnie, well said - Katie has just lost her beloved Mabel and arguing over how she could have died is completely inappropriate.

I do not know what is happening to this forum recently, but I have found on every other thread there is some sort of dispute or disagreement.

This once used to be a friendly forum....I hope we can get back to this.

Katie....I am so sorry to hear about Mabel...thinking you you hun x

I'm sorry that you lost her.

If it helps, it's likely that you couldn't have done anything since it was so sudden an unexpected. A post-mortem (this option is your choice) will tell you the exact reason why she died, otherwise, I'm sending you hugs and well wishes in the other options.

*hugshugshugshugs*

Note from Admin

It is totally unacceptable to be arguing on a thread where a member has lost her much loved pet. This will not be tolerated!

I would like to thank the members who have offered their support at this sad time. We have always been a friendly forum, where we share our love of piggies! Let's not lose sight of that!

i don't understand how questioning a diagnosis was arguing, tracy. i'm sure everyone here wants to learn as much about piggie care as they can, and i was adding my own experience with this problem to it. i wasn't the first person to contradict your opinion. mine just wasn't on a medical basis.
obviously this forum has a very fine line between discussion and arguing, so i'm sorry i've overstepped it.
